About 10th Annual Holly Springs Half Marathon, 10k & 5k
The 10th Annual Holly Springs Half Marathon brings you race distances of Half Marathon, 10k & 5k. Whether you are a seasoned runner or hoping to complete your first distance race, you’ll absolutely love these course options. It offers a little bit of everything…from rolling hills to fast flats…from open neighborhood roads to greenways and down Main Street. The Holly Springs Half Marathon, 10k & 5k races introduces runners to the best that our town has to offer.
All 3 races start from Ting Park, the home of Holly Springs Salamanders’ baseball stadium, tennis & pickleball, and Wake FC soccer located at the North Main Athletic Complex. Runners will begin their journey just outside the stadium and have a fast down hill start, onto Sportsmanship Way and approach N. Main St. Crossing Main St., for the first mile all runners will be challenged, and rewarded, by the rolling hills of Anchor Creek as they approach the entrance to Middle Creek Greenway.
From here, the 3 races split with the Half Marathon runners heading south through the neighborhoods of Bridgewater, Windcrest, Sunset Ridge, Veterans Park, Jones Park, through the historic district and down Main St., and into Womble Park. A figure-eight loop through Womble Park will have you doubling back along the same route back to the entrance of the Middle Creek Greenway at about mile 7.2. The next 5 miles are along the greenway with turn-arounds at both ends before re-joining Anchor Creek Way for the last mile back to the finish line.
The 10k and 5k courses enter the Middle Creek Greenway from Anchor Creek Way just short of mile 1 for the respective races. At the junction of the access ramp, The 10k makes a hairpin right turn and first heads south wandering along Middle Creek to the aid-station near the Wood Creek development for a turn-around and a return north to the next turn-around at Sunset Lake Road. The 5k course also heads down the access ramp to the greenway, but first heads north to the turn-around at Sunset Lake. Both courses turn-around at Sunset Lake and return south to the junction proceeding up the ramp back to Anchor Creek Way for the last mile to the Finish line.

CAN I RUN WITH MY STROLLER? HOW ABOUT WITH FIDO?
Strollers, yes! Just please know that we ask that you start at the back of your race corral and if your running the Half please know that getting around Bass Lake in the mulch and back up to Sugg Farm will be quite a challenge! But hey, go for it! Children being pushed in a jogger or stroller do not need to be registered (unless you wish to give them a medal and a shirt).
Fido, unfortunately no. We understand many of you run with your pet but we ask that you let your running buddy sleep in. We want to make sure that our participants in the (crowded) start area corral are worry-free, and that along the course we have no worries of accidents. We appreciate your understanding.

Summer Heat Running
Coach Kelly Svihovec and Coach Dave Gross of Triangle Run Smart Training share below some very helpful info for running and training in the heat & humidity of Summer.

Given our current heat wave this week, let's consider hydration and the following tips:
We've settled into our warmer and definitely very humid summer weather which means to pay more attention to your perceived effort and less to PRs and paces. The key weather indicator that we want to look at in adjusting our pace is: dew point - that takes heat AND humidity into account. Here is more information on the impact dew point has on us runners.
And to help you determine how to adjust your pacing, here's a temperature/pacing calculator. Enter the dew point, temperature, your goal pace, running distance & type of run (easy, tempo, or race). Check it out before an upcoming run to get a more accurate pace goal and please note that having to run slower is NOT actually making you slower. You're putting in MORE effort in tough weather conditions and your fitness is improving exponentially. And your body will adjust some as you get more used to running in humidity. You might still not enjoy it per se, but you'll get better at handling it in terms of your breathing, recovery, & pace. :)
What can we do in addition to adjusting our pace and performance expectations? We can work on getting our body temperature down, since as it rises, our pace and performance decrease:
- Pre-cool - consider taking a cool/cold shower before a hot run, drink a cold, icy beverage beforehand, use cool washcloths on your body ahead of time
- During run - refrigerate or freeze your hydration beforehand so it's cool when you drink it, aim for a shady route (if running during daylight hours), wear light & wicking material, bring a cold washcloth or buff for your natural radiators (palm of your hands and forehead but not the back of your neck). Don't skip electrolyte replenishment
- After (for recovery) - cool/cold shower, cold hydration, cold washcloths, and get in an air-conditioned environment as soon as possible out of the heat.

Stay cool, safe and enjoy your run!
