Bernice Moore

Team "Sweet Bernice" is running in honor of Bernice Moore. Bernice was kind enough to share a bit of her journey with us.

"I have had a history of ulcerative colitis since 1986. I was told as years progressed; I might have future problems. On October 9th, 2023, my life was changed. I had a colonoscopy, and a polyp was removed and after being sent to lab for test my results were not good. I had cancer under where the polyp was removed. My doctor sent me to Duke for final testing. It was confirmed that I needed to have colon cancer surgery. I will not go into details but on December 13th I had surgery at Duke. They were able to get all my cancer and no treatments were required, I was so thankful God is good. It was quite an ordeal, but I am now living with an ostomy bag for the rest of my life but that is ok considering how it could have been. I get depressed at times but due to such great family and friends I am dealing one day at a time. I am back at work and doing my walks every day. I am so blessed that things were as good as they were. I wish every cancer story could be like mine!!!!" - Bernice

Cortney Herndon

One thing we’ve learned through the years is everyone participates for a different reason! This story was shared by Neal Herndon as to why their team “Rocking H Runs for C” participates in Bridge2Bridge.

“I created Rocking H Runs for C in honor of my beautiful wife Cortney Herndon, the love of my life since we were 15-years old and the toughest person that I know. Cortney was diagnosed with breast cancer on June 3, 2015, at 35-years old. Ironically, she had just participated in her first Bridge2Bridge run about 6-weeks prior. At the time, our son Jackson was 9-years old, our daughter Maya was 7-years old, and our youngest daughter Addison was 3-years old. As it is true for every family, we were devastated when the doctor said, “It’s cancer.” But the Lord had already impressed upon Cortney that the bad news was coming, so we were not surprised by the diagnosis. We knew that we were in for the fight of our lives, but we also knew that we were not going to be fighting alone. In our corner was Jesus, our precious kids, both sides of our family, our church Swansonville PH, and Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer Association. In retrospect, it really wasn’t a fair fight! We really could not have done what had to be done without each…the support we received still astonishes and humbles me to this day. We were truly carried by many for about 18-months. After treatment and twelve surgeries in twelve months, Cortney was declared cancer free and on her way to recovery.

To this day, although with daily side effects, she remains cancer free; something that we are eternally grateful for. I am not sure why some share the same outcome as us, but some are less fortunate. Rocking H Runs for C and all the cancer survivors like Cortney that have battled and still battle to be labeled a survivor. Rocking H Runs for C also runs for those that will one day receive that life altering diagnosis. Finally, Rocking H Runs for C runs for those that fought the good fight, and their time here on earth was all too short… to those individuals and their families, we continue to stand with you and run for you.” - Neal Herndon

NOTE TO ALL PARTICIPANTS:
In an effort to reduce congestion on the pedestrian walkway, the Danville Police Department has agreed to close the right lane of the North Bound MLK Bridge to allow ALL RUNNERS to utilize the road which will allow only WALKERS to cross using the pedestrian walkway.
Those participating in the 5K Run/10K, and 1/2 marathon, will begin their event as they always have by running down Bridge Street, (please beware of the cobblestones), toward Patton Street, but will now cross the Dan River using the Right Hand Traffic lane on the North Bound MLK Bridge which will be closed to traffic. They will take a Right onto the Right Hand Lane of River Street, (58 East), and take another RIGHT onto the sidewalk at the Davenport Gas Company as they proceed to the Riverwalk Trail.
IMPORTANT-Here is where the HALF MARATHONERS will NOW take a Right onto the River Walk Trail and head toward the YMCA and the the 5K RUN/10K RUNNERS will enter the River Walk Trail on the Left, headed toward Dan Daniels Park.
The Walkers will cross the MLK Bridge on the pedestrian sidewalk as they always have done. They will stay on the sidewalk when they get to 58East/ River Street, take a right at Davenport Energy and enter the River Walk Trail on the RIGHT, heading toward the YMCA.
WALKERS-Please be aware and respectful of the 1/2 marathoners who may be returning to the finish line at the same time that you are. Please give them ample space on your RIGHT as they merge with you upon EXITING THE RIVER WALK TRAIL and continue back onto 58. This is a change from last year. THANK YOU!
The runners and walkers will return to the finish line the same way they came out. The walkers will again have the entire pedestrian walkway on the MLK Bridge available to them, thus reducing congestion at the start and finish of each race. After leaving the River Walk Trail, all of the runners will return on 58 and the now left hand lane of the MLK Bridge and turning LEFT back onto Bridge Street and to the finish line.

Half Marathon

Head straight up Bridge Street toward Patton St. Be careful on the cobblestones. At the end of Bridge St, take a right onto the wide sidewalk north bound on the MLK Bridge. After crossing the bridge, take a remaining on the wide sidewalk. Just before reaching Davenport Gas Company, take a right and head toward the Riverwalk Trail. Turn left onto the Riverwalk trail and continue downstream toward Dan Daniel Park. You will pass a restroom prior to the 1.5 mile water stop. You will pass the 2 mile marker just before the River Park Dr trailhead at Dan Daniel Park. You will veer right at Ghost Island where there will be a water stop at 3.1 miles.

Continue on the trail making no turns until you arrive at the large Rugby Field where you will take a left. Continue around the field until you reach the second yellow gate as you enter the Anglers Parking Lot. You will follow the cones as you hug the right lower parking lot and continue up to the restrooms, on your left and through the second set of yellow gates, on your right where there will be a water stop on your right. The first 4 miles are flat but as you follow the paved trail which curves off to your left, the climbing begins! You will follow this paved trail for approximately 1.5 miles to the top where you will pass another yellow gate and reach the intersection of Stinson Dr and Slayton Avenue. YAY – pace yourself on this section!

We will have some water for you at this point. The intersection will be closed and we will have a police officer or pedestrian crossing to ensure your safety. You will cross the street at the pedestrian crossing and take an immediate left as you head up Slayton Avenue. Stay on the left side of the road as you run a short spur up and back to get in the necessary mileage. Volunteers will be there at the turn around. As you make the turn and run back up the street on the left side and reenter the Riverwalk up to the turnaround which is just shy of the Danville Regional Airport.

Note: You will not have to do the “spur” on the return. The sidewalk is nice and wide and in good shape, and also a bit hilly. You will reach the turn around located at the Airport Trailhead Parking Lot where you will be greeted by smiling faces and the water and fuel stop sponsored by the Brick Tri and Running Store! We will have a port-john, GU, oranges, water and Gatorade!

Elizabeth B. Hunt

Elizabeth Bridgforth Hunt

A devoted wife, a loving daughter and sister, and a true friend, Elizabeth Bridgforth Hunt lived a full and adventurous 31 years.  Born in Danville, Virginia, Elizabeth was proud graduate of Carlisle School in Martinsville, Virginia, and the College of William & Mary, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and Orchesis Dance Company.  Elizabeth worked and studied in Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Beijing, and throughout Europe.  Elizabeth later worked in Washington, DC for the FreerSackler Gallery at the Smithsonian Institution.  Her faith and her boundless spirit led her to travel all over the world.  With the Last Well, she summited mountains to provide drinking water in Liberia.  With her family and friends, she hiked, dived, skied, hunted warthogs, laughed, and danced in countless countries.  She completed an MBA from the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University.  She married Andy Hunt in 2013 and the couple made their home in Richmond, Virginia, where Elizabeth passionately built her career in global marketing for WestRock.  Her husband, parents, brother, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and colleagues will remember that amidst her dynamism and ambition, she most valued quality time with loved ones, especially on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

Elizabeth’s character was most evident in her approach to her disease; she never wasted a day.  Elizabeth noticed an ulcer on her tongue in February 2015 and was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma.  She underwent extensive surgery to remove the primary malignancy and reconstruct her mouth and tongue.  Just days after surgery, she astounded her nurses and doctors by walking a mile around the halls of the surgical trauma ICU.  Elizabeth underwent six weeks of chemotherapy and radiation, while still living the life she loved - walking, practicing yoga, traveling, and completing work projects.  In September 2015, scans indicated that disease had returned to her tongue and metastasized in her neck, lungs, and hip.  Elizabeth and Andy searched the country for the best available treatment and ultimately traveled to Houston to participate in a Phase 1 immunotherapy trial.  The progression of her tumors steadily eroded her ability to eat, speak, and walk, but the disease never shook her resolve to live better or her fierce independence.  During a visit to the emergency room, Elizabeth complained not of her chronic pain or fatigue, but rather of boredom.  Elizabeth passed away peacefully on January 6, 2016.

“Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength” – Mahatma Gandhi

I was diagnosed with breast cancer on March 1, 2021 at the age of 31. My kids were 3 and 5. I started having symptoms of breast cancer in March 2019. I was having discharge from right breast and thought it was related to nursing because I had just finished breast feeding 4 months prior. I had appointment after appointment with my doctor because the color and texture of the discharge kept changing. My gut was telling me something was wrong, but my doctor was dismissing the situation because of my age and lack of family history. In February 2021, I decided to advocate for myself and demanded a diagnostic mammogram. My life forever changed on February 25, 2021. I had two biopsies that day, although I did not receive my official diagnosis until March 1, I knew it was cancer that day. I began my marathon of appointments on March 3. My original diagnosis was Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS-Stage 0). I had a single mastectomy on March 18 and pathology from that revealed that my cancer was invasive (IDC Stage 1B). I transferred my care to Duke and began my journey. I completed 6 rounds of chemo, 18 rounds of immunotherapy, 30 rounds of radiation, a lymphadenectomy, and a prophylactic mastectomy. I was declared No Evidence of Disease (NED) on August 31, 2021. My breast cancer was hormone positive, so I still receive a shot monthly and take daily medication to keep me in medically induced menopause.

Cancer was the hardest thing I have ever experienced, and I still suffer from side effects from treatment and my daily medications. My quote while going through treatment was, “You can do hard things.” I was determined then and I am still determined that my diagnosis will not define me or limit me. My journey with BC has given me the opportunity to witness to and help other women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. It also made me realize how much I am cared about, how strong I am, and most importantly, it strengthened my relationship with God. In life we will go through more than we can handle on our own, so I am so thankful that we serve a God who will never leave us nor forsake us. “The Lord will Fight for You; You Need Only to Be Still” (Exodus 14:14).

Jim Gilbert

Jim Gilbert loved the outdoors. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.  He was a tobacco farmer and took great pride in every year's crop.  He spent years coaching softball and basketball. He was a husband, a brother, a grandpa, an uncle, a devoted father to three girls, and a wonderful friend.

In the fall of 2012, Jim started complaining of stomach discomfort and digestive issues. Being a man who never complained and who was never sick, his family immediately got him into a doctor's office.  Seven long weeks later he was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of bile duct cancer. He fought with every ounce he had for 8 months. On May 21, 2013, he passed away surrounded by his loving family.  It was during the 8 months that his family heard about Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer.  This organization helped with prescriptions and with gas mileage as he traveled back and forth to Duke.

Team Gilbert has participated in Bridge to Bridge for the last 3 years.  We are so thankful for the help provided by Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer and we are so honored to be able to walk/run in Jim's memory.

“You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live.” --Stuart Scott

Judy Cox

My journey with cervical cancer began in February 2017; however, the effects of the treatments continue today. After receiving chemo, external radiation, and internal radiation, I had a hysterectomy to ensure my tumor was removed in its entirety. Soon after these treatments, I began to experience urinary infections due to the radiation. I spent a great deal of time going to the operating room for bladder surgery. With the surgery, I had in-dwelling catheters as needed, and my kidneys were beginning to be impacted. As time passed the infections continued, and many times I became septic. I quickly had to learn how to self-cath. This opened the door for more infections and sepsis. On December 29, 2023, I had major surgery to remove my bladder. The surgeon built a pouch on the inside of my body with my intestines as opposed to the outside, which is called an Indiana Pouch, to store urine. This is the most major urological reconstructive surgery out there, and it will impact the quality of my life greatly. The surgery will also help improve my kidney function and reduce the number of infections and sepsis. This is my journey. It has been ongoing with ups and downs.

It was through my cancer fight that I learned about Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer Association as they provided monies to help with travel and medicine. I would like to thank God as well as my family, friends, doctors, and hospital staff for all of the support throughout these past years. A special thank you is owed to the Danville- Pittsylvania Cancer Association. Please participate in the Bridge to Bridge in order to help raise money for this awesome Association so that individuals with cancer can receive the many benefits.

Justin Walters

Team- Run Like You Stole It

Team Run Like You Stole It was first created in the 2014 Bridge2Bridge 5K/10K race as a way for family and friends to honor the life of Justin Walters.  Justin was diagnosed with Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma in April 2013.  Adrenal Cortical Carcinoma (ACC) is a rare disease and is caused by a cancerous growth in the adrenal cortex.  The adrenal cortex is the outer layer of the adrenal glands, which lie on top of the kidneys.  They play an important role in the endocrine system, which is the system that produces and regulates hormones.

After Justin was diagnosed with ACC and began chemotherapy sessions, he was made aware of Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer.  Up until that point, he did not know much about Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer and what they did for our community.  Justin was a pilot and therefore was not able to work after he had surgery to remove the tumor and begin chemotherapy.  Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer offered great assistance to Justin during this time of need when his income was not enough to cover cancer-related expenses that were necessary for his health. They assisted with expensive medications that were not covered under insurance and with travel to Michigan, where he visited during a round of a clinical trial.

Justin passed away on December 29, 2013, at the age of 31 surrounded by his family.  During his time fighting cancer, he NEVER gave up on living his life to the fullest.  He continued to be an amazing friend, a great dad, an awesome boyfriend/fiance, a caring brother and a loving son.  He wore a bright smile that everyone remembers and loves every single day, even if he was sitting in a chair receiving chemotherapy.

After he passed away, a friend brought to our attention the Bridge2Bridge race held here in Danville to raise money for Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer.  We could not pass up the opportunity to arrange a team to honor Justin's life and to give back to a local organization that gave so much to Justin and gives just as much to others.  The part that we love most about the Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer is that any money that they receive, stays local.  Being able to give to an organization that helps those in our community is a great feeling.  Knowing that our team is doing something to help give someone else going through this horrible disease some peace of mind is just what Justin would want us to be doing.

Justin loved hunting so much that our team wears a blaze orange t-shirt with a logo of ducks and deer on the front along with an airplane in the air since he was a pilot and loved to fly. Our team gathers every year to run/walk and cheer together.  If you stand among our blaze orange team on race day, you will see us laughing and smiling together just as Justin would have wanted. We also make it a point to gather up and say a prayer before leaving for the starting line to thank God for the blessings we have been given to have known Justin.  We as a team, feel blessed to have had him in our lives and for our opportunity to give back to an organization that gives so much back to others in need.  We are looking forward to another great group to "Run Like You Stole It!"

Karen Johnston

I have always been a strong supporter of charities that help those afflicted with various diseases and disorders and those that seek a cure. After losing a number of friends and my beautiful sister Phyllis to cancer, I began making contributions to various cancer research groups and charities. I also decided to grow my hair longer and donate it to Locks of Love; the organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long time medical hair loss. It seemed like a way to give from the heart and I took comfort in knowing that I would be helping someone in a difficult situation. In 2009, I donated an 11-inch ponytail.

I also resolved to take care of myself and stay healthy and strong: bike riding, running, horseback riding, walking, reading, spending time with family. These seemed like good ways to enjoy life. Many of these activities I undertook with friends, none of us knowing what was ahead in my journey. In 2008, I was diagnosed with cancer and my own life’s course was changed forever. I was no longer on the sidelines witnessing the battle; I was on the battlefield.

A cancer patient spends a great deal of time in doctors’ offices and lab and that was true for me. At each visit, I noticed and appreciate the care and love from our local oncologists and their staffs. Without fail, they treated me as if I were the only patient ever to be diagnosed, as if I were the most important person in the world. Over time, I came to see that they treated every patient this way. The doctors, nurses technicians, receptionists—they were incredibly wonderful people. In the chemo lab especially, as I sat for hours connected to intravenous therapy. I watched and listened and felt awed at the kindness of the staff—their words of wisdom, their compassion, their gentleness. They even inspired me to consider becoming an oncology nurse, so great was my desire to help people suffering with this illness and so remarkable were the men and women committed to healing me.

During my treatments, I met some of the finest people I have ever encountered, including other patients. We were a team; we were there for the same purpose – trying to stay alive and I noticed that some patients never had family or friends visit like I did. I listened as patients tried to figure out how they were going to return for the next doctor or chemo appointment or how they were going to pay for their medications or their utilities. It was obvious that some patients didn’t have insurance, jobs, transportation, family, or the energy to get through the next day. Even as cancer medicine dripped into my veins, I felt I had to count my blessings and giving thanks to God for sparing my life. I realized I needed to do something to help those less fortunate.

Then, the light bulb came on while I was talking to a physician’s assistant at my doctor’s office. A 5K Run/Walk would be a great way to involve the community and raise money for the Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer Association while simultaneously promoting good health habits for participants. What better way for our community to support Danville-Pittsylvania Cancer, which receives no funding from the American Cancer Society. Members of the DPC don’t toot their own horns because they’re too busy helping others.

The Danville Pittsylvania Cancer Association focuses on patient aid with over $200,000 spent on cancer-related prescriptions, travel assistance, medical supplies and equipment, wigs, prosthesis and other special needs. We do provide some educational materials and still present educational programs. DPC also has a support group that is held at 223 Riverview Drive, Suite H on the last Tuesday of every month (except June and December).

Nearly everyone’s life has been affected by cancer, either personally or through a family member or friend. Until there is a cure, there is no escaping it. I have witnessed and felt firsthand the warmth and caring of the people of Danville and Pittsylvania County. I work at Karen’s Hallmark Shop in Danville Mall and over the years I have met some of my best friends there. Such loving and giving people: parents, family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and customers. I am truly blessed to live in this wonderful community of such solid, good-natured people. Southside Virginia is truly a place where people care about each other. We each have talents or gifts that we’ve been given and we must use them in positive ways. When we all join together like my friends and family have done, there is nothing we can’t accomplish. Join us in helping the DPC. Please keep an eye out for the information about the 9th annual Bridge-to-Bridge 5K & 10K in Danville, Virginia.

Rachel Terry

“Run for Rachel Terry” -

The “Run for Rachel Terry” team was formed to honor a beloved teacher, Mrs. Rachel Terry, who went to be with the angels on August 5th, 2016.  Rachel fought cervical cancer for eighteen long months.

Rachel was diagnosed with a rare form of cervical cancer in March, 2014.  With her type of cancer, she was not a candidate for surgery, but started radiation and chemo treatments shortly after her diagnosis.  She completed her treatments in the summer of 2014, to be cancer free for only a few months.  Shortly after the start of school, Rachel discovered not only had the cervical cancer reappeared, but it had spread.  Just as her hair was beginning to grow back, she started treatments again.  This time, she chose not to wear a wig, but to go “all natural.”   In the spring of 2015, she was told the treatments were no longer working and began exploring other treatment options.  She was accepted into a clinical trial in Charlotte, only to have one treatment before her health took a turn for the worse.

During all these months of treatments, Rachel never complained about her disease.  She spent every moment she could with her precious family and worked as a kindergarten teacher every day she could physically get to work.  She even taught summer school just two months before she passed away.  She used her disease for teaching opportunities.  When it was time for class pictures, she surveyed her class asking if they wanted her to wear a wig or not wear a wig for the class picture.  She graphed their responses. The verdict:  they voted she wear the wig, and she did.  During kindergarten graduation, she would stick her head through the curtain and remove her hat to make the children laugh (to calm their nerves).  She never disclosed, even to her closest friends, how serious her illness was.  She lived in the moment every day.

Rachel always had a smile on her face and put others before herself.  Up until her last day, she used her illness as an opportunity to bless others and spread the joy of God’s love.  She led many people to salvation and touched the lives of hundreds of children and their families.

Rachel often spoke of how Danville Cancer blessed her life by helping with the extra expenses of her illness. It is our hope, that her memory will be honored by our participation in this event.

“Rachel and I shared many stories and laughs about our families and school as co-workers, friends, and as parent/ teacher because I've had the pleasure of working with two of her children.  Rachel's faith and family was the source of her strength in all things.  Being with her always brought out the best in me!  She is and always will be a part of my life, and I love the thought of continuing to support her family by participating in this event in her memory.”     – Nell Buckner

“I was inspired to “Run for Rachel” because of the influence she had on my life as well as our students’ lives at Southside Elementary School.  She had a passion for teaching children as well as loving them.  Rachel taught me to smile no matter how bad I felt or how sorry I felt for myself.  During her battle with cancer, she came to school with a smile on her face.  She never complained or spoke negative about her illness.  Rachel always put others before herself.”  – Leah Reese

Rachel was a devoted wife, nurturing mother, loving daughter, and caring teacher.  For me, Rachel was a faithful friend.  Words cannot express her influence in my life.  I “Run for Rachel” because I want others to hear her story and carry on her memory.  I “Run for Rachel” to support the Danville Cancer Society.  I “Run for Rachel” because running has helped me cope with the pain of her loss. – Wendy Dunevant

People come into our lives for different reasons during different seasons. Sometimes like a passing ship in the night just passing through or they stay a spell to inspire, influence, motivate, and/or teach you. It’s not always how long they stay it’s what they leave along the way. I “Run for Rachel” as a tribute to carry her strength, kindness, inspiration, love, devotion, motivation, and friendship in hopes that it will  inspire us to love one another leaving a positive, potent, and powerful inspirational pathway along our journey of life. So Let’s “Run for Rachel” ---Regina Majied

Physical challenges may present as any of the following; lack of balance, strength, and flexibility, mental challenges such as anxiety or depression, and sensory issues such as poor hearing or vision.
The "Wheelchair Athlete" will use a device such as a racing chair that is designed for race competition, ie..hand brake, tether, appropriate wheels/tires.  *Children in strollers are not considered "Wheelchair Athletes".
"Wheelchair Athletes" and their "Pusher" will both receive bib numbers, packets and t-shirts, if registered by the t-shirt deadline. Both the "Wheelchair Athlete" and the "Pusher" will be placed together into an "Wheelchair Athlete" category. "Wheelchair Athletes" and their "Pushers" will not be eligible for Overall Awards, Age Group Awards or Team Awards. The "Wheelchair Athlete"  as well as the pusher will receive a Finisher Medal.
