GORE-TEX Kahtoola Uphill on February 21, 2026

The GORE-TEX Kahtoola Uphill is a fun, family-friendly annual mountain race up and down the slopes of Arizona Snowbowl that celebrates human-powered movement. It's also the biggest fundraiser for Friends of Camp Colton, with 100% of the proceeds supporting youth environmental education in Northern Arizona.

Choose Your Challenge

Hike up using your preferred traction gear (MICROspikes® traction, hiking crampons, snowshoes, etc.), or skin up with AT skis or a splitboard (Midway and Öo’mawki only). With events ranging from easy to challenging, sign up for the Cambium Wealth Partners Fun Climb, Midway Climb or the Lumberyard Brewing Co. Öo’mawki Climb, or hang out at the base and cheer on the racers.

• Cambium Fun Climb: A 1-mile journey with a 600 ft. elevation gain. Ideal for those seeking a short but rewarding climb.

• Midway Climb – Traction: Tackle 3 miles and 1,550 ft. elevation gain using your preferred traction gear, perfect for a steady ascent and quick descent.

• Midway Climb – Skinning: The same challenging distance and elevation, but for those preferring the ascent and descent with AT skis or a splitboard.

• Lumberyard Öo’mawki Climb – Traction: Embark on a 3.5-mile race with 2,200 ft. climb, using your trusted traction gear for a more intense challenge.

• Lumberyard Öo’mawki Climb – Skinning: For those who opt for skinning, this 3.5-mile race with a 2,200 ft. vertical ascent offers a unique mountain experience.

• Note: Starting in 2025, the name of the Agassiz Climb has been changed to the Öo’mawki Climb (Hopi meaning "house of clouds"). The course will be the same, the only change is the name of that particular event. Thank you to the efforts from students in the Flagstaff High School Native American Club, who advocated to have the name of this peak restored.

A Community Gathering

• Free MICROspikes® demos: At check-in, Kahtoola offers a chance to demo MICROspikes® footwear traction. Availability is based on a first-come, first-served basis for racers and demos will be collected at the end of the race.

• Costume/Dance Contest: Get creative and have fun! Whether you're racing or spectating, join in our costume/dance contest. It's a great way to add excitement to the day and show off your creative flair.

• Win Exciting Prizes in Raffles: Take part in the Race Raffle and the Golden Ticket Raffle for a chance to win fantastic prizes. You do not need to be present at the event to win!

• Support a Great Cause: Your participation in the race and any donations you gather support Friends of Camp Colton. There are awesome prizes for each race, and fantastic incentives for top fundraisers!

Race Packet Pick Up + Loaner Spike Check Out

The big day is almost here! But before you race, you'll need to pick up your race packet. If you need a set of traction, we will offer demo MIRCOspikes on a first-come, first-served basis. If you can make it, we invite you to join us for happy hour at the Elks Lodge on Friday 2/20 – we recommend picking your packet at this time to avoid the rush on race day, and you can also enjoy food and drinks!

PLEASE NOTE: You must pick up your race packet at one of these events prior to the race. Race packet pick up and loaner spike check out will be available at the following times and locations.

• Friday February 20 from 4pm to 7pm at The Elks Lodge — enjoy complimentary small bites provided by Pizzicletta and drinks available for purchase! Plus we'll also have complimentary GU products up for grabs as well as a chance to win some prizes!

• Saturday February 21 from 10am to 12pm at the Kahtoola Office

For both pick up events:

• You may pick up race packets for yourself and/or for a family member or friend.

• Loaner spike check out: Kahtoola MICROspikes® and MICROspikes® Ghost traction will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. No payment is required. Limited quantities are available, and all spikes must be returned at the end of the race.

Race Rules

• Stick to one method: Use the same method (spikes, skis, snowshoes, etc.) for both ascending and descending. Mixing methods (like hiking up and skiing down) is not allowed. For Midway and Lumberyard Brewing Co. Öo’mawki races, choose your category (traction or skinning) during registration.

• Obey downhill navigation rules: Skiers must keep to the left, while runners and hikers should stay on the right. Always be cautious near areas with flashing lights.

• Inform staff about course changes: If you complete a different course than registered, inform the timing staff at the finish line.

• New team rules in 2025 - Teams are not limited to 4 members, you can create a team with a minimum 2 and no maximum. Due to this change, there will not be race team awards, but we hope this encourages more team participation. However, there will be awards for the top fundraising team and the best dressed team. Team members are allowed to complete different courses.

• For Lumberyard Brewing Company Öo’mawki Climb participants: there is a 6pm cutoff time at Midway (top terminal of Grand Canyon Express lift) for safety. If you have not reached this checkpoint by 6pm, you will be redirected to Midway Catwalk and your race results will be posted under the Midway Climb.

Safety Rules

• Mandatory safety gear: All racers must have a headlamp. Helmets are required for skiers and snowboarders on downhill sections.

• Ski responsibly: Skiers, please descend responsibly and slow down at merge points.

• Racers only on course: Only participants with bibs are permitted to race and re-entry onto the course is not allowed after completing the race.

• Lumberyard Brewing Co. Öo’mawki Climb cutoff: For safety, Agassiz Climb participants must reach the Midway checkpoint (top of Grand Canyon Express lift) by 6pm. After 6pm, you will be redirected to Midway Catwalk, and your result will be under the Midway Climb.

• Avoid terrain park obstacles: All racers should steer clear of features in the terrain park, including jumps and ramps.

• No sledding, biking or motors.

Most Importantly, HAVE FUN!

• Upon arrival at Snowbowl, you may park in any of the numbered lots close to Fremont Restaurant + Bar, above or below the main entrance gate. Please DO NOT park in the small lot directly behind Fremont Restaurant + Bar, the drop off area in front of Hart Prairie Lodge, and behind Hart Prairie Lodge.

• Please be ready to race at Fremont Restaurant by 4:40pm. After opening remarks, all race events are scheduled to begin at 5pm.

Please plan to dress warm as there will be limited space inside. There will be tables both inside and outside the lodge, with heaters located outside on the patio area.
Dinner will begin at 6pm and end at 8pm. There will be a self-serve buffet station inside Fremont Restaurant. A full bar is open inside the restaurant serving beer, wine and cocktails.
Race awards and raffle prizes will be announced starting around 7:30pm. You do not need to be present to win a prize.

We will have timing mats at the top of the Lumberyard Brewing Company Öo’mawki Climb and the Midway Climb. This is to ensure accurate race results as well as offering split times for ascent and descent. However, if you don't cross the timing mat at the top then your time will be dropped from the results. Please note, during extreme cold and snowy conditions, these timing mats may not work. In that case, we won't drop times. Where you need to cross the timing mats will be made as obvious as possible. 

If you don't finish the course that you signed up for and finish a different course (ex. being signed up for Öo’mawki and dropping to Midway during the race), your time will automatically be thrown out from the results as well. Please tell a volunteer at the start/finish line if you do not complete your registered race course. As always, will be offering top finisher awards for specific categories and you can check out those categories below!

IMPORTANT Bib Information: 

• Race bibs need to be pinned ON THE FRONT OF THE CHEST on the outermost layer of clothing.  If you need to avoid a jacket zipper, please shift the bib to the left front chest.

• Please do not bend or crimp the timing tag affixed to the race bib.

• Bibs are souvenirs and do not need to be returned.

• Families and Groups - please be sure the 'correct' person wears each race bib. Each bib will be labeled with the respective racers information when you pick up your race packet.
