Our starting line will be on CR 177, which is the road north of the railroad tracks at the base of S Mountain. Course will head northwest along 177 and then turns right and uphill to a water tank. Turn left at the water tank to CR 175, turn left to CR 177 or the road north of the railroad tracks, and head back to the starting line. This section of the course is nice packed dirt roads and paved highway with little elevation gain. Take advantage of this to space out before the single track.
Runners will then head east around the new bike skills park to connect to the Frontside trail. Runners head up the Frontside Trail to the Spiral Drive road and kiosk, where the first aid station of the race will be located (mile 3.4). Runners will then head downhill on Spiral Drive to the Rusty Lung intersection and take a right to head up the Rusty Lung Trail to CR 173. Turn left and head uphill on CR 173 before taking an almost immediate left onto the North Backbone trail. Follow this trail for just over a mile before turning right onto the Dudes Abides trail. Follow Dude Abides until it terminates at CR 173. This location is where the marathon runners will rejoin the half marathon course - please pay attention to runners coming up behind you.
Runners then head downhill for a very short stretch on CR 173 to reach the 2nd aid station at the CR 173/Sand Dunes intersection (mile 6.1). Turn left onto the Upper Sand Dunes Trail. This next stretch of the course is fairly technical - watch your footing. Head downhill on Sand Dunes for .7 miles, and then turn left to head uphill again on the Prospector trail. This stretch of trail can be muddy - remember to run through any muddy sections and not around. Turn right to head down the very end of the Uncle Nazty trail, and then turn right to head down the Cottonwood trail. Runners follow the Cottonwood trail to its intersection with the Backbone trail and continue to follow the Backbone trail. Follow the Backbone trail until you reach the Tenderfoot trail, and veer left to follow the Tenderfoot trail. Follow Tenderfoot all the way to the Spiral Drive road.
Runners will then head up to the top of the Spiral Drive road - a local favorite! Stay on the left hand side the entire time you’re on Spiral Drive, following the road around the small building up top and heading downhill to the Lil Rattler trail. Head onto Lil Rattler to the Spiral Drive kiosk and your first and now last aid station at mile 11.5.
Head back down the Frontside trail, following it all the way out to the dirt road. Turn right and then follow the course markings to cross the railroad tracks at the at grade crossing; follow the road west to the parking lot, cross the F Street Bridge and turn left into Riverside Park. Follow the path east through Riverside Park back to the finish near the Salida Scout Hut. Congratulations, you have finished!

- This is a new version of the course. Distance is 26.2 miles
Runners will then head downhill on Spiral Drive to the Rusty Lung intersection and take a right to head up the Rusty Lung Trail to CR 173. Turn left and head uphill on CR 173 before taking an almost immediate left onto the North Backbone trail. Follow the North Backbone trail for about 3 miles until it ends at CR 175 and your 2nd aid station (mile 7.7). This stretch of trail will most likely be icy/muddy at times.
Race will then head up CR 175 - this is an uphill section of a little over 4 miles on a plowed dirt road. This section of the course is where you will see the most vehicle traffic - some of whom drive faster than the posted speed limit. Please be aware of vehicle traffic during this section and stay to the side of the road! You will see your 3rd aid station at the Beasway trailhead at mile 11.7 - runners will continue on CR 175, heading past the aid station for .4 miles until you’re turned around by a volunteer. Runners then head back down to the aid station at mile 12.5. Whomever reaches this aid station first will win a bottle of whiskey from Wood’s High Mountain Distillery. If you do not reach this aid station location on your first pass (mile 11.7) by the time cutoff, you will be pulled from the race and given a ride back to town by aid station staff.
Runners will then continue the race on FR 181. This 1 mile stretch of road will most likely be hard packed snow. Race course then takes a right on FR 173 and will head mostly downhill for over 5 1/2 miles to the 4th Aid Station, located at the CR 173/Sand Dunes intersection at mile 19.1. This road can be very snowy, especially near the top, with areas of difficult footing, along with some icy and potentially muddy sections. This road is a very rocky jeep road - when snow starts to clear in some areas, be aware of the rocky and uneven footing underneath. There will be a time cutoff at the 4th aid station for marathon runners as well.
After leaving the 4th Aid Station, turn left down the Upper Sand Dunes Trail. You will have rejoined the half marathon course - runners near the front of the marathon field will start to pass half marathon runners here. Stay on the left hand side the entire time you’re on Spiral Drive, following the road around the small building up top and heading downhill to the Lil Rattler trail. Head onto Lil Rattler to the Spiral Drive kiosk and your first and now last aid station at mile 24.5.

On Course Aid/Support and Recommended Gear
On-Course Aid and Support
We will have aid stations for both the half and full marathons, with a mix of typical aid station food, water, and Tailwind nutrition. All aid stations are cupless. Carrying some type of hydration system is mandatory in the marathon, and strongly recommended for the half marathon.
Recommended Gear
The marathon high point is located at 9k feet, and the half marathon high point is located at 8k feet. We've had some years with pretty warm temperatures, and other years when it has snowed - please pay attention to the weather forecast and be prepared. It's a very good idea to bring a wind layer and warm top if the weather forecast is looking iffy. Aid stations are cupless, so runners are required to carry their own hydration system.

Race Rules and Safety Considerations
Thank you for joining us for the Run Through Time! Please note the following race rules and event safety considerations. These have been designed for everyone's overall race experience, enjoyment, and safety. Contact Kristy at rttsalida@gmail.com with any questions. Any racer who fails to comply with race rules faces disqualification from the race.
- Foot travel only.
- Time limits will be enforced for the marathon and half marathon. There will be 2 intermediate time cuts off at 7 1/2 hour pace for the marathon.
- No dogs or any other animals allowed on course with racers.
- For the safety of all athletes, we ask that spectators please do not drive up CR 173 or CR 175 due to the narrow road, rough terrain, and blind switchbacks.
- No littering – pack it in, pack it out.
- You must follow the course – no course cutting.
- For safety, to preserve the experience, and for fairness, we do not allow crewing or pacing out on either race course.
- This is a cupless race – please carry a water bottle or other hydration system. Carrying some time of hydration system is mandatory in the marathon and strongly suggested for half marathoners.
- Per our insurance, we strongly request that runners do not use earbuds with music during the race.
- Poles, while not commonly used, are allowed in the marathon. They are not allowed in the half marathon, unless specifically approved by the race director.
- Help other runners in need.
- Obey race officials’ instructions. Please remember that all course marshals and aid station workers are volunteers – thank them for their efforts! Any complaints should be made to the race director.
- Trails will be open on race day to other users. Roads will be open to traffic throughout the race. Please be aware and respectful of other users, and use common sense around vehicle traffic.
- Race officials reserve the right to alter courses if needed based on race day conditions. We reserve the right to cancel or postpone this event based on land agency or other permit managers’ directions.

Half marathon competitors may change race distance at any time before Thursday, March 12 - email rttsalida@gmail.com if you would like to make a change. If you switch from the half marathon to the full marathon, you will be charged the difference in entry fee. Marathon competitors are allowed to switch down in distance until the half marathon fills. After that time, you may be able to switch down in distance, but this will not be guaranteed, and the later you sign up, the lower your chances are.
Spectator and Parking Tips
Parking on the downtown streets in Salida is limited to two hours. Please pay attention to parking signs. Free all day parking may be obtained across the F Street bridge near the start/finish area, and in the parking lot on the west side of Safeway. If those lots are full, on street parking with no time limit is available starting at roughly 3rd or 4th streets. The City of Salida has created a very informative, interactive map which shows Salida's downtown parking areas, along with ADA spaces and electric charging stations. Check it out here!
For safety, to preserve the experience and for fairness, we do not allow crewing or pacing out on the courses. If you want to be out on the course the perfect way to do that is to volunteer to work at an aid station or as a course marshal. We’re always looking for volunteers, and your help is definitely appreciated! To find out more about volunteering, please contact Kristy at rttsalida@gmail.com.
The race finish will take place in Riverside Park, which is located on Sackett Avenue in downtown Salida, off of F, E, and D streets. This is Salida's most popular park, and is located right by the Arkansas River, with a very popular playground area. Please note that dogs are not allowed in the park unless they're on the pedestrian paths. In order to keep our permit in order with the City of Salida, we ask that everyone respects this rule.
All trails and roads remain open to other users, and spectators are encouraged out on the lower trail system to cheer on runners. Out of concern for participant safety and because the Forest Service has asked us to limit the number of spectators at the uppermost aid station on the marathon course, we ask that spectators do not drive up CR 175 or CR 173 during the event. There are plenty of great spots to watch the marathon on the lower sections of the course.

Two Mile Run
The two mile run is a loop course on dirt and gravel roads. Two milers will begin when the half marathon race starts, and will follow those runners on their first 2 miles. Start time is 9am, and the race is open to everyone. This race has been gaining in popularity every year, and is a great option for runners of all ages!
Please note: although you don't need to be fast, this event is meant to be a running race and not a walk. Our timer needs to drive (which takes much longer than walking) back to the finish to be set up for the first half marathon finishers. Roads will be open to other users, including vehicles, throughout this event.
All two mile participants will receive a pair of race socks. There are no awards for this event.
