Join the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the APA Foundation (APAF) for the MOORE Equity in Mental Health 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Walk & Roll
Run, walk, and roll to support organizations that promote awareness programs and provide services to improve the mental health of young people of color.
Race Details
In-Person 5K Run and 1 Mile Walk & Roll
The event will be held rain or shine unless the weather conditions are unsafe (ex. lightning).
Location: Freedom Plaza, Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington DC
Date: Saturday, July 11, 2026
Check-in: Starts at 7:00 am. Arrival prior to 7:45 am required to participate in race.
Awards and Prizes: At 9:30 am, awards will be given to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in the Men's Division, Women's Division, and Nonbinary Division. Random drawing winners will be announced following the awards ceremony.
Remote 5K Run and 1 Mile Fun Walk & Roll

Schedule of Events

Wheaton Regional Park opens at sunrise. For the best parking, please arrive early.

Registration and Packet Pickup opens at 7:00 am to collect your bib and enter into the random prize drawing.

Arrival prior to 7:45 am is required to ensure your participation in the race.

Brief speaking program begins at 7:30 am.

The 5K run, walk, and roll will begin promptly at 8:00 am.

The 5K concludes at 9:30 am.

At 9:30 am, Men's Division, Women's Division, and Nonbinary Division winners will be announced, followed by winners of the random prize drawings.

Who was Bebe Moore Campbell?
Bebe Moore Campbell was a mental health equity champion and New York Times bestselling author who tirelessly worked to bring public awareness to minority mental health. In 2008, U.S. Congress dedicated the month of July as "Bebe Moore Campbell National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month," focused on improving mental health services for people of color through education and addressing stigma.
Through the MOORE Equity in Mental Health Initiative, the APA celebrates every summer with a series of community-wide events focused on promoting mental health equity for young people of color.
What is the MOORE Equity in Mental Health Community Grants Program?
The MOORE Equity in Mental Health Community Grants Program was established in 2021 by APA's Division of Diversity and Health Equity and the APA Foundation to support community organizations that are undertaking innovative awareness programs or providing services to improve the mental health of young people of color. Learn more about our grantees here.
How can I help raise funds to support these organizations?
By joining our 5K! Registration for the in-person and remote 5K is free. Participants are encouraged to set up an individual fundraising page or join a fundraising team to support the community grants program. Share your fundraising page with your network via text, email or social media.
Who can participate in the 5K?
All are welcome, including APA members, staff, community members, and supporters of all ages.
Race Day Questions
Is bib swapping allowed?
Absolutely not. Registration is free, so be sure to sign up for your own bib and help keep our race recording accurate across all categories.
How should I wear my bib?
For the most accurate chip read be sure your bib is fastened to the front of the outermost layer of clothing, secured with 4 safety pins.
Can I bring my pet?
Unfortunately, park regulations prohibit pets at this event.
I have a stroller. Is that okay?
Absolutely! We are excited to have anyone, of any age, participate in the event. We do ask that if you are running or walking with a stroller that you start the race towards the back.
I can’t attend anymore and would like to give my registration to someone else. Can I do that?
No. Your registration cannot be transferred to anyone else. All participants must register for the event. This allows our race recording to be accurate and better ensure your safety.
I’m bringing friends/family to the event, but they haven’t registered. Is that okay?
The more the merrier! They can register on site and pick up their bib at the registration tent.
Will the in-person 5K be canceled if it's raining?
The 5K in Wheaton, Maryland, will be held rain or shine unless the weather conditions are unsafe (ex. lightning). If you are participating in your local community, please monitor the weather and put safety first.
