About Back Your Badge Marathon
The Back Your Badge Marathon is a premier running event proudly sponsored by the Town of Plainfield to honor and support all Public Safety Agencies — Police, Fire, and Communications. These dedicated professionals have made a shared commitment to the health and wellness of their personnel, and now it’s your turn to join them on the course. Celebrate community, wellness, and service at the 4th Annual Back Your Badge Marathon, featuring three exciting race distances — the 5K, Half Marathon, and Full Marathon — giving runners and walkers of all levels a chance to participate.
The scenic, USA Track & Field Certified Course highlights the very best of Plainfield, combining historic US 40, the Plainfield Parks Trail System, and routes that pass local police, fire, and communications facilities. Each participant chooses an agency to represent, and every mile completed adds to that agency’s total. The team with the most combined miles will earn bragging rights and the coveted traveling trophy. Beyond the finish line, every step makes a difference. All proceeds directly support Public Safety Beneficent Programs, Local Youth Assistance Programs, and the Back Your Badge Paramedic Scholarship Fund, investing in the next generation of those who serve.
Join us in celebrating fitness, unity, and service — and show your support for those who protect and serve our community every day.

Meet Ambassador Cindy Weakley
The big birthdays motivate me. In 2017 I ran my very first 5K at age 55 and was hooked. Since then, I've ran approximately forty-five 5K's and multiple 10K's. In 2019 I ran my first half marathon; my second half marathon was the year I turned 60 and my third was on my 61st birthday last Fall. I'm ready to take the next step and attempt my first full marathon! I'll turn 62 years old the day after the 2024 "Back Your Badge Marathon" so my goal is to say I ran 26 miles the same month I turn 62. I'm not fast so my goal is to finish feeling good, fingers crossed for this goal, it will be a stretch but I'm excited to give it a shot.
Meet Ambassador Gerald Collins

Ambassador Gerald A. Collins from Dayton, Ohio. Gerald works as an endurance coach and clinical laboratory scientist while being an active runner. Gerald has been running for 11 years completing 1-50k, 3 - marathons, 9- half marathons. 9- 10k's, 25- 5k's, 10- 8k's and several other mixed distance events.
Why are you excited to be a BYB ambassador? I love unique races and themes. This race is a great way to show support for the local community and first responders. This will be the 1st time I've had to get in at the beginning of the race series.
What inspired your desire to begin walking/running? In May 2011, I lost my mother to breast cancer. She was first diagnosed in the early 90s and was in remission for over 15 years. When it reared it's ugly head, she fought as hard as she could. Her tumor markers had been decreasing from the chemotherapy. It was a total shock when she told me on Friday, April 29, 2011 that she had been transferred to Hospice care and they had stopped chemo. By Sunday, May 1, she was only able to speak in short 3-5 word sentences. She literally went from full conversations to that in 2 days. By Monday, she was pretty much catatonic. She passed at home late Monday into Tuesday. The suddenness of her death put me in a very dark place emotionally. The grief was consuming me. My wife gave me an ultimatum on May 2012 to find something to process my grief. I always knew I could walk a 5K but I wanted to run one. I choose running as a way to process my grief. I remember I spent a month training to run one mile. I finished training for my first 5K and ran it in August 2012. What was meant to be a one and done turned into a huge passion. I fell in love with the local running community and running itself. It saved me and my relationship. In the fall of 2013 I ran my first marathon. I found out what they mean when they say you feel like you can accomplish anything after you cross that finish line.
How do you inspire others to be active? Having spent many years as a mid pack and back of the pack racer, I have a perspective that some don't. I share my journey and encourage others to do what you can do. A step in the right direction to make a better choice improves your life little by little. Those little choices add up and make bigger changes.
Where’s your favorite place to train? I love training on the open roads. I'm an all weather outdoor runner. I love seeing the sunrise over the horizon or the leaves change in the fall. One of my favorite places to train is the trails neat my house.
Why should others run the BYB Marathon? It's a great race! It's your chance to be a part of something fresh and new. It's a great way to support the unsung hero's in the community as well.
Meet Ambassador Heidi Pifer

My name is Heidi Pifer and I live in Plainfield! I started running in college, but suffered a water skiing accident and had to stop while training for The Mini Marathon in 2014. I started running again after my first son was born in 2018 and have run quite a few 5K's since! I’m a sucker for good run/walk causes whether it’s for American Red Heart, Thanksgiving ones for families, or a great T-shirt like the Bubble Run.
I love the Town of Plainfield and as a nurse practitioner for the Hendricks Wellness Centers, I get the amazing privilege to serve each branch of Plainfield of Public Safety. I love my job and taking care of people who primarily care for everyone else but themselves. One of the things I’m passionate about is exercise and the opportunity to publicly support each branch while practicing what I preach seems like a dream come true!
I come from a family of athletes- my cousin (basically sister) is an Ironman, my brother is a tri-athlete, and I really liked to study nursing. So when I became and adult and had my first degree, I wanted to try my hand at running for weight loss and did my first 5k. They (my family) were so proud even though my first race was their warm up. After my accident, I always wanted to get back to it but was afraid to get hurt again and was intimidated by other runners. In between my pregnancies, I needed a way to clear my head mentally at work during some breaks and also after work but with everything closed the trails were my saving grace. They provided time to think clearly, stay mentally fit, and helped me to stay positive during the pandemic with my oldest. So many stroller runs 😂, but it spurred a great habit of exercising for 1/2 of my break at work and that made my day so much better overall mentally. I love the break that running gives me physically and the relief it gives me mentally.
I am pretty sure a lot of the town gets tired of my “exercise snack” mentality but it’s my favorite aspect of exercise that I gained from the Lifestyle Medicine Conference that I was able to attend. Most people feel they are too busy to do a 45 min-1 hour workout (a full meal if you will). But everyone can do 10 minutes here… 10 minutes there… (snacks). Everyone loves snacks! I love to inspire people to start where they are and just add a little. We don’t need to start with the meeting every goal day one or we won’t complete it or get burnt out fast. We need to start by building our goal. One snack at a time!
My favorite run is Hummel park. I like the back loop and the smaller hills that make me feel accomplished! For trails I love Eagle Creek.
BYB Marathon is a way for us to give back to the community that spends their careers serving us. Whether it’s dispatch, fire, or police each branch give 100% of themselves to keep us and our community the wonderful place it is to live, play, and grow. I think the BYB Marathon is also a great way to teach our kids how even a small act (my four year old will be walking with my husband) can make a huge impact if we work together as a community for a common goal. I cannot think of a better cause to wake up early, gain some endorphins, and show these amazing people how valued they are by their community! And the t-shirt. The t-shirts are awesome, and as stated before, some races are worth the t-shirt :)
Meet Ambassador Marisa Donovan

I'm Marisa Donovan, and I'm excited to be a "Back Your Badge Ambassador"! I am not an elite runner, and I don't have aspirations for that. In fact, the idea of doing a run-walk combo even seems out of my reach. But you know what? I can do this, and I can't wait for this race! As a walker, I still get many of the health benefits as my faster friends, and I can enjoy the beauty of everything around me. I love walking the Plainfield trails and other local paths.
Why should you join me at the BYB event? Nearly everyone can participate! I know, I know - you don't have time to train. Neither do I! That's why we have to make the time. Even if you feel out of shape right now, you can be ready to take on the 5K, or set your sights higher and sign up for the half-marathon!
As a principal in Plainfield, I get to spend my time with so many wonderful kids every day. How great would it be to see kids from our community involved in this event! If you're participating, get your son, daughter, niece, nephew, next-door neighbor, or any other kid to join you! Do you need motivation? They won't let you slack off (because we all know they have more energy than you!).
With a "goal time" of 3 hours and ten minutes set for myself, I won't be setting any land speed records in September. But, I'll be out there, anyway. I know the benefits I will gain from getting out there and training won't be recorded in that time. If I can do this, so can you!
See you on the trails!
Meet Ambassador Mindy Jaramillo

My name is Mindy and I'm from Greenwood! I started my health journey back in 2017 but found my love for running in 2018 when my New Years Resolution was to run a 5K. Since then, I've not only managed to shred off and keep off 113 pounds but I've started running more competitively. I'm even planning on running my first ultra at the end of 2025! I can't say the journey has always been easy but I'm always down a challenge and I love seeing others challenge themselves. I love running not only to clear my mind and to stay healthy but because there's such a certain level of comradery in racing that always lifts my spirits.
Meet Ambassador Ruby Cline-Eaton
Meet Ambassador Ruby Cline-Eaton

I'm Ruby Cline-Eaton known locally as A Runners Mom & More. I was born & raised in Northern Indiana and came to Ky as part of a startup team for work, I retired in 2016. I got into walk/running accidentally because of my daughter. While attempting to go from one spot to another for her running pictures during a race event, I was so out of breath it was terrible! I decided then I had to do something.
I have RA so getting started was a struggle to say the least. I have continued for health benefits, Motion is Lotion!
I began signing up for Virtual race events and was proud of every medal I managed to 'earn'. I then began doing some live competitive events as well several years ago going on Race'Cations with my daughter and her friends.
While I'm out and about getting in my steps it gives me a chance to mentally reset, enjoy the scenery and the changing of the seasons.
My recent race was the Norton Sports Health 4-miler placing 2nd in my age group. I go into a race with only the thoughts of 3.1 miles of Healthy Steps, 3.1 miles of Healthy Lifestyle, 3.1 miles of showing & encouraging other older athletes we can do this.
During my Monday morning radio segment on local station WHIR1230AM I talk about all things running/walking/hiking/fitness for all ages.
There's no such thing as perfect weather for races & running but there's always perfect adventures when you attend race events and get to meet new people young & old.
Thanks for considering me !
#LetsDoThis !
Ruby Cline-Eaton
Meet Ambassador Stacy Waldridge

I was a 15 year smoker who finally quit in 2014. During my journey of quitting I started walking just for exercise. It felt so good to breath again. Walking everyday eventually turned into running. I then realized that I had overcome the addiction of nicotine & became addicted to endorphins. I quickly came to the realization that there is a better life than smoking & its never too late to quit. One 5k lead to multiple & then onto 10k & then to half marathons. This October I ran my fourth half marathon. I do not run for speed or competition any more. I only run with my heart. I love to run for good causes & for people who can not. I lost my Dad 3 years ago to lung cancer. Every race I run with 3 pearls in my pocket to remember him, breathe, & to climb those mountains as they come. Running a marathon has always intimated & scared me. I will be 46 years old in December & I am ready to climb & tackle that mountain in 2024!

Meet Pacer Pedro Feliciano (1:35 Half Marathon) New for 2025

I’ve lived in Fishers, Indiana for about 3 years. I started running XC and track in middle school, competed in high school and college. I am part of the Fishers Running Club. I enjoy running ultras (will have ran 9 by the time Back Your Badge happens) and hope to do my 1st 100 miler this year!

Meet Pacer Trenton Vickrey (1:40 Half Marathon) Back for 2025

I'm Trenton Vickrey, an avid runner with a passion for pushing boundaries. Over the past year, I've completed 8 half marathons, 1 full marathon, and 3 ultra marathons. As a middle school Physical Education and Health teacher, I enjoy motivating others to surpass their limits.
I love many different forms of exercise, with running and indoor rock climbing being my favorites. I can’t wait to meet fellow runners and assist them in achieving their goal of running just under 1:40 for the half.

Meet Pacer James Atkinson (1:45 Half Marathon) Back for 2025

I have been running since 2015. I have completed for full marathons including New York City in 2022. I also completed several ultramarathons as well. I currently team lead for a training program in Kalamazoo Michigan. I am looking forward to helping runners achieve before our goal. I am supporting the fire department with my miles at the back your badge marathon!

Meet Pacer Peter Qumsiyeh (1:50 Half Marathon) Back for 2025

“Peter loves to run and strives to achieve astonishing goals, but more importantly, he loves to help others achieve their goals. Pacing is the perfect way to do so. Since 2015, Peter has completed over 120 half marathons and over 30 full marathons, most of them as a pacer. Peter always comes in within one minute ahead of goal, never behind, with even splits and lots of encouraging stories along the way. Meet Pacer Jen Haney Conover (2:00 Half Marathon)
I am archivist by day and love going to live music. I’ve even gotten my five year old in on the fun. I have a twin sister, and a brother less than a year younger than us, making us Irish Triplets. I love Halloween and Christmas, and will always dress up for a good theme. I started pacing friends about 7 years ago after needing a break from trying to PR under 1:45. I’ve ran over 40 half's and 2 full's. I love cheering on and motivating others to give it their all. Can’t wait to see you get under 2 hours with me.

Hi, my name is Kristen Bruna and I am grateful to have the opportunity to pace this awesome race. Meet Pacer Stephanie Woods (3:50 Marathon) Back in 2025
I'm Stephanie (Steph) Woods- been a runner for over 13 years. I got into running after adopting an overweight black lab named Pongo. He introduced me to running as a way for both of us to stay healthy. Since then, I've run anything from 5ks to 50ks with marathons and trail running being my favorite. Pongo has passed away but I run with two Rhodesian Ridgebacks, Lanta and Leander, who keep that spirit of dog/human bonding alive. I qualified for Boston in 2021 and ran it in 2022. Came back from an injury in 2023 to finish 4th overall at Tecumseh 50k. Now, I'm gearing up for a 100k in spring of 2024. When I'm not running on trails, you'll find me sipping on some Athletic n/a brews, reading and socializing with my other athlete friends. I'm so excited to be pacing Back the Badge and look forward to getting you to your goal!!

Severe Weather
Weather:
Severe weather is always a possibility and unpredictable. We will not make any race decisions until race morning. If thunderstorms/heavy rain hinder morning preparations on our crew/volunteers there could be a delay to get the event ready for a safe race. If thunderstorms/heavy rain arrive near the start of the event...there could be a delay to let it pass. We work directly with our safety team and adjust according to what Mother Nature is tossing out at us. If the delay gets to be to late into the day there could be reason to alter the event prior to starting. This rarely happens, but in a situation were we can race, but maybe not all distances.
Severe Weather Arrives While On Site/During Travel:
If severe weather pops up during your travel, or while your on site please stop what you are doing and implement your own personal safety plan. Seek shelter, and let the weather pass. The Richard A. Carlucci Recreation Center will be open for participants and spectators to seek shelter.
Severe Weather During Race:
If severe weather occurs DURING THE RACE at any point-please know the race will IMMEDIATELY be cancelled. Timing will be shut down. With our best efforts we will have our safety team and staff spread out notify athletes and volunteers that the race is called off, and to implement your personal safety plan. SEVERE WEATHER including, but not limited to Thunder/Lightening will cancel the race. Stop racing, and seek shelter/coverage.
COMMUNICATING UPDATES:
All updates will be made via email, social media post on our Back Your Badge Marathon event pages (twitter/Facebook), and via on site announcements as best as possible.
