About Bear Lake Brawl Triathlon

The Bear Lake Brawl Triathlon is held at Bear Lake State Park (Idaho) on the Idaho side and East side of Bear Lake. Bear Lake is often called the Caribbean of the Rockies due to its incredibly blue water set in high in the mountains. This race has four distances.

Half 70 1/3 Distance Long - Swim 1.2 Miles, Bike 56 Miles, Run 13.1 Miles

Olympic Distance Intermediate - Swim 1500 Meters, Bike 24.8 Miles, Run 6.2 Miles

Sprint Distance Short - Swim 750 Meters, Bike 12.4 Miles, Run 3.1 Miles

(Full 140 2/3 Distance is not renewed for 2026. This distance causes us to have an extremely long day finishing the last racer around Midnight. We have to start as early as 7AM and this causes issues with set up and the sun only rises around 6:45AM. After 8 years of trying to grow this distance we have decided to not renew it for all the stress and lack of participation with around 30 to 40 racers. We are sorry it is not back)

How to Sponsor

Sponsoring a race is great. You can put up a booth at the packet pickup and/or finish. You can put up banners on the course or on the website. Facebook posts and email blasts reach all the participants. Sponsoring a race can be a low cost way to reach a good group of racers or give this group of a racer a commercial directed at you or your business. Each race On Hill Events produces has different participation size. For this reason On Hill Events varies costs on sponsorship based on the size of the race. The most effective way to sponsor a race is to sponsor On Hill Events. This way your sponsorship reaches around 10,000 racers annually in several areas as far as Idaho to Southern Utah and even Southern California. Ask us about our sponsorship via this email: info@onhillevents.com

Course - Full 140 2/3 - Not Returning

After a lot of review we have decided to not bring back the Full Distance for 2026. The reason we have not brought it back was due to only having around 30 to 40 racers participate in this event from year to year. This event is the hardest to produce and after expenses we have not seen a return on it. It is a long stressful day with this event and feel we can do a better job on the other distances without this distance.

No renewal for this Distance in 2026!!!

Swim Course 2.4 Miles

The Swim Course diamond shaped swim. 4 laps around all 4 buoys. The smaller area helps us provide stronger support for this long distance. The first buoy is 250 meters away then the second is 232 Meters, the third 232 Meters, the fourth 250 Meters. The total around the diamond shape is .6 of a mile.

Bike Course 112 Miles Two Laps Around Lake

The bike course goes completely around the lake. Though the lake is 50.2 miles around it we add a small out and back to make up the distance to get it to 56 miles for the first time around. The second lap does the same. Aid stations on this course are at Mile 16, 39, 56, 72, 95, 112. Aid stations have Water Bottles, Powerade, Water and bathrooms. Relief bag is at Mile 56 and Mile 112 near the transition area but outside the gate. The route is fairly flat with some rollers on the East side of the lake.

Run Course 26.2 Miles

The run course is out and back two times. Runners leave the transition area and head out and back on East side of Cisco Road. This is a flat and scenic route with Bear Lake on the Westside and Mountains on the Eastside. Aid stations are 1.55 to 1.8 miles apart and they are as follows: Start, Mile 1.55, 3.1, 4.825, 6.55, 8.25, 10, 11.55, 13.1 w/Relief Bag, 14.65, 16.24, 18.01, 19.65, 21.35, 23.1, 24.65.

Aid Stations have an assortment of Gels, Granola Bars, Candy, Oranges, Bananas, water, electrolyte and more.

Finish Line - Includes Two Hot Soups, Bread, Ice Cream, Peanut Butter, Oranges, Bananas.

Transition Area Layout

The reason for the format we use in the transition area is to allow every spot in the transition to be equal distance to exits. If you are closer to the Bike Out you will be farther from Run Out.

2 - Deferrals and Transfers cost $15($50 Full/Half) and must be done 15 days prior to Race (This can only be done once)

Transfer - This race to another On Hill Events race in the next 12 months and credits what you paid minus fees & taxes.

3 - Race Insurance - Cash Refunds if you purchase Race Insurance at the time you registered (Minus taxes & fees).

*These options must be done by using the Self Management Tool in the Upper Right Hand Icon of all our websites and prior to the 15-day deadline. We can assist via email or phone but the Deferral/Transfer must be done yourself 15 days before race day regardless if you emailed us or left a message before the 15-day Deadline. Check out the Contact Us page for Step-by-step instructions.

Referral Program is a great program we do. Refer 5 friends and get 100% back on your credit card. No longer is it 10% per referral but 100% for 5 which is more.

We do not do any of these programs manually or else we would be like all other race companies and not offer them. They are too difficult to manage manually and open us up for errors in timing. If you wish to participate in one of these programs you must do so electronically before the deadlines. Emailing, Texting us or phone call or voicemail does not count as notifying us before the deadline. If you do not know how to do one of these programs we are happy to help explain how to do them yourself but they still must be done electronically yourself before the deadlines. If you need help please contact us well before the deadlines, so you do not miss the deadlines.

Pricing Deadlines

Pricing Deadlines

Charge based on days prior to the race. Why do fees go up as we get closer to a race? If we had everyone register 3 days prior to the race we would not have time to buy medals, shirts, buses, etc. The earlier you register the faster we can order your race items and prepare for the race. We offer race insurance from a 3rd Party Insurance company for only 8.1% of the registration cost. Race Insurance gives you your money back. We strongly encourage racers to register early and get Race Insurance.

90 Days prior the race day, the Price goes up 5% from the Opening Price

60 Days prior the race day, the Price goes up 10% from the Opening Price

30 Days prior the race day, the Price goes up 15% from the Opening Price

15 Days prior the race day, the Price goes up 20% from the Opening Price

7 Days prior the race day, the Price goes up 25% from the Opening Price

3 Days prior the race day, the Price goes up 30% from the Opening Price

Same Day Registration if available (Check website homepage) will be a $10 fee on top of the 30% from the Opening Price.*

*We love all racers but same day registration is truly a challenge for race companies. We may not have the supplies we need for a successful race when same day people come. We may be short on shirts, medals, bus seats etc. It is a challenge with race data as well. Often the timing system is already preloaded. If this is the case we will often give you a bib with the name Late Registration, Female at 99 years old so you do not accidentially take someone elses award. We can switch your data once you finish but often the starting system is in another location than the finish and will not be able to be edited until post race. If you are concerned  you may not be healthy or injured check out Race Insurance and buy your bib early. For only 8.1% of your race fee you will be insured against several situations including sickness or injury.

What do I do if I do nott have the following:

  • Race Bib Belt: We recommend having a tshirt at the T1 (Transition 1) at your handle bars. Put your bib on your shirt (safety pin) prior you start the race so when you get out of the water all you need to do is put on your shirt and magically the bib is on it. You do not want to be putting on bib during race. We sell Race Bib Belts for $10 at Packet Pickup if you do not have one.
  • Tri Suit: A Trisuit is a waterproof suit people use for under their wetsuit. This suit is used during the bike and run. If you do not have one you can either rent or borrow one or like around 50% of the racers just use a pair of shorts or swim suit you can comfortably bike and run in. Tri Suits are not required and though will improve your experience are not used by all racers.
  • Wetsuits: Pool swims do not allow wet suits. If you are in a lake swim like Bear Lake Brawl Triathlon or Southern Utah Triathlon we strongly recommend them. Wetsuits have two primary purposes. One they keep you warm and two they give you extra buoyancy or floating ability. For this reason it is strongly recommended to use one but do some training with one prior to race day. Many train only in the pool without wetsuit. Very different being in open water floating higher on the water, colder water and the wetsuits can constrict your chest giving you less Oxygen. If you do not have a wetsuit you can rent or borrow one or go without. USAT allows wetsuits in water temps below 78 degrees. Though under 65 degrees wetsuits are not required they are strongly encouraged. Under 58 degrees wetsuits are required. We have never been below 58 but at Bear Lake Brawl Triathlon we have been close and the air temps well below that. Strongly encouraged.
  • Helmet: If you do not have a helmet you cannot compete. Go to your closest bike shop to buy one or even Walmart to satisfy the requirement.
  • Bike Tubes: It is recommend to have bike tubes and a hand pump. Check your pressure prior to race day and do not start your race with old tubes. Though we have a support vehicle with tubes and air this vehicle(s) takes time to round the course and may even miss you. If you do not have them you can call them and they will come race day. Sometimes other cyclists will have some but they generally have enough for themselves.
  • Road Bike: A Road Bike is not required for triathlon however a mountain bike or other type of bike may be much slower. You can rent or borrow a road bike to help improve your times.

Refunds

No Refund Explanation and Options:

Many racers have questions about refunds. Around 3 days prior to a race we have racers bombard us with the question can I get a refund. They all have justified reasons in their minds ranging from a family event came up (wedding, funeral, vacation), or related to their body (illness, injury, poor training). Though our policy is firm "No Refunds" people still ask. Even though we have racers sign this policy at time of registration, they still ask. Not to diminish your situation but pretty much every race company has a similar policy to "No Refunds". The reason for such a policy is not to be heartless but to be able to stay in business. If you register we buy you things like t-shirts, medals, food, permits for race, bus seats, support, and more. If we offered refunds within 72 hours prior to the race we would lose the money we spent on your shirts, bus, medals and food. You may feel that permits we can get refunded on but even permits have scalable fees based on how many racers are signed up. Drop13 pays the US Forest Service 5% of our gross not net fees to them.

Unlike other race companies, we strive to offer other options that can help you out. An example is we buy medals 60-90 days in advance. Tshirts 10 to 30 days in advance. Food 7 days in advance. Buses 60 to 90 days in advance. Volunteers 7 to 60 days depending on Paid Groups or individual volunteers. Permits are started 9 to 12 months in advance. Because some things have some flexibility and we can recover some we offer options other race companies do not like Deferrals and Transfers up to 15 days prior to the race for a fee (see Refund Policy)  We also offer Race Insurance at the time of registration for only $2.99 to 8.1% of your race fee depending on your race fee which covers most situations that may arise. We strongly recommend signing up for this insurance at registration time because race fees grow as race day approaches. Many racers will wait to register to confirm a weather will be good race day and do not account for race fees increasing around 30% between registration starting 9 to 12 months out and race day fees. Insurance covers Severe weather.

Other Options if within 15 days prior to race day:

Utah Race Saver (Not affiliated with On Hill Events)

If you did not purchase Race Insurance at the time of registration or are within the 15-day option for deferrals or transfers your only option is to give or sell your bib to another racer. It is your responsibility to sell or give your bib to another racer. We do not handle the transactions or sell them for you. If you do not know who can purchase your bib you can post it on the Facebook group Utah Race Saver https://www.facebook.com/groups/utahracesaver  to sell it. Often you can sell it for less than what it is currently being sold at because the fees go up the closer the race gets. Reminder all exchanges via email to us at info@onhillevents.com  must be finalized 96 hours prior to race day or you will incur a $5 transfer fee and must be done the day prior at packet pickup. Just have the person you gave or sold it to come to packet pickup the day prior with $5 cash. At 96 hours prior to race day we stuff and label race packets.
