About Floppin' Flounder 5K
The Floppin’ Flounder 5K Run/Walk is one of Charleston’s favorite local 5Ks.
Presented by the Charleston Running Club (CRC) with help from the Sullivan’s Island Fire & Rescue Department, this event has had a loyal following for over 25 years.
We offer a 5K Run and a walk option, and all participants receive a race shirt and finishers medal.
Proceeds from Floppin’ Flounder benefit the Sullivan’s Island Fire & Rescue Dept., CRC, and other local charities.
Age group and award breakdown
- Top 3 overall male and female
- First Master (40 years and older) male and female
- First Grandmaster (50 years and older) male and female
- First Great Grandmaster (60 years and older) male and female
- Top 3 in the following age groups (Ages 10 and under, 11-14,15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85 and over. )
In addition, we present the Peyton Moore award to the fastest boy and girl under age 12. This award is in memory of one of CRC’s youngest and most enthusiastic members, Peyton Moore, who passed away on June 4, 2013. Learn more about Peyton.
This event takes place rain or shine. It will be hot, so please hydrate and wear sunscreen!

5K Course
The course starts and finishes at the the Sullivan's Island Fish Fry shack. Please familiarize yourself with the course before race day. If you can, incorporate it into your training.
This is an open course meaning there will be cars on the road as well as runners.
The course will be well marked with volunteers, but it is your responsibility to stay to the right when running with traffic and to the left when running against traffic.
Please be courteous and mindful of cars and other runners. We want everyone to be safe!
Turn-by-turn directions:
1. Start on Middle Street, just east of Station 141/2 at the Fish Fry Shack.
2. Proceed up Middle and turn right onto Station 9 St.
3. Run one block then turn right onto Osceola St.
4. Merge back onto Middle Street, run past the Start/Fish Fry Shack then veer left onto Central Ave.
5. Turn Right onto Station 20 1/2 St.
6. Turn Right on Middle St and back up to the Fish Fry Shack.
7. FINISH: Veer LEFT onto Hennessy and you will see the giant Arch for the finish at the Fish Fry Shack.

Sullivan’s Island Fire & Rescue Department provides fire protection and emergency first-responder services to both residents and visitors across Sullivan’s Island, and fire protection to the Fort Sumter National Park and associated structures.
FAQ
CAN I REGISTER ON RACE DAY?
Yes, you must register on your phone using the RunSignup site. It may be crowded, and you may not receive your preferred shirt size, so we encourage you to REGISTER EARLY.
WHAT IS THE REFUND POLICY?
Floppin' Flounder adheres to standard running industry policy which dictates that registration fees are non-refundable and we do not offer deferrals.
If you cannot make the run, your money does go to a good cause- the Sullivan's Island Fire and Rescue.
You may transfer your registration to another runner without charge. Click here or, in your RunSignUp account, click on "Profile," find the race on the "Upcoming Events" tab and click on "Manage Registration" to transfer your registration.
CAN I JUST GIVE MY BIB TO SOMEONE ELSE?
NO. If someone runs under another person's bib/name/date of birth is an immediate DQ - Disqualification. You MAY transfer your bib to another runner for no charge before packet pickup. To transfer your registration to another runner go to your Run Signup account and click on your Profile. Find the face on the Upcoming Events tab and click on Manage Registration to transfer yout registration to another runner.
IS THERE A TIME LIMIT FOR THE 5K?
Yes, all runners must be off the course be 9:30 AM.
ARE T-SHIRTS INCLUDED IN THE REGISTRATION FEE?
Yes, as long as you select a size when you register.
DO I GET A SHIRT IF I DON’T PICK UP MY PACKET?
No, you do not get a shirt if you do not pick up your packet. You may have a friend or family member pick it up for you. We will not mail shirts.
WHAT IF MY SHIRT IS THE WRONG SIZE?
You can exchange your shirt for a different size at the end of the race, provided we have the size you need. A member of the event staff will help you.
ARE AWARDS BASED ON GUN TIME OR CHIP TIME?
Overall awards are based on gun time.
Age group awards are based on chip time.
WHAT IF IT RAINS OR THE WEATHER IS BAD?
The event will take place rain or shine. There will be no weather-related refunds.
The event can be canceled if the Race Committee determines the course is unsafe due to poor weather conditions.
ARE WALKERS, STROLLERS OR DOGS ALLOWED?
Walkers and strollers are allowed in the 5K. There is a separate Walk division you can register for as well.
All walkers and strollers must start at the back and must be off the course in 1.5 hours.
Dogs are NOT allowed on the course or in the start/finish area due to the heat at that time of year and our liability insurance conditions.
IS THE COURSE CERTIFIED?
Yes.
WILL RACE PACKETS BE MAILED?
Race packets will not be mailed but can be picked up at packet pick-up by a friend or family member.
WHERE DO I PARK?
Parking is allowed along any right of way roadway, as long as the area is free from "No Parking" signs. There is additional parking near Battery Jasper and Fort Moultrie. Please be mindful not to block any of the residents' access to their driveways or homes. There is additional information in the Parking section of the website.
Vehicles must have all four tires off of the roadway/pavement including golf carts.
IS THERE A POST-RACE AWARD CEREMONY?
Yes, there will be a post-race awards ceremony around 9:00 AM.
Awards for overall finishers, masters, grand masters and senior grand masters, and age group awards from age 14 and under to age 80 and above in 5-year age groups.
Also, the fastest boy and girl aged 12 and under will receive the Peyton Moore Award.
CAN I PICK UP ANOTHER RUNNER'S PACKET?
Yes, you may pick up another runner’s packet.
IS THE FLOPPIN' FLOUNDER FOR CHARITABLE PURPOSES?
Yes, the race raises funds for the Sullivan's Island Fire & Rescue Department, Charleston Animal Society, and the Charleston Running Club.
Parking
- Please make sure all 4 tires are off of the pavement when parking on the side of the road! This includes golf carts
- MIDDLE STREET: both sides have parallel parking available. Be mindful of the parking and "No Parking" signs.
- BATTERY JASPER: Drive PAST 15th Station/Hennessey and turn left on the next street, Palmetto. Follow the signs to "Historical Marker" and there is a lot of parking along the Battery Jasper park.
- Do not block driveways when parking.
- Parking along Poe, Atlantic and other streets on Sullivan's Island: Please follow all parking signs and do not park where not allowed or block driveways.
Do not park in the Library or Post Office parking lots.

Packet pick up will close at 7:45 AM on race morning, as the run/walk begins at 8 AM.
