PRE-RACE CLINICS

Pre race clinics will aim to help prepare athletes to race with confidence. Certified triathlon coaches with Fury Tri Team will teach step-by-step how to set up transition, race each component of the event confidently and safely, know how to handle the transitions between each leg of the race efficiently, and finish strong. Our goal is to help athletes know exactly what to expect, how to make their race run smoothly, and to feel confident going into the race.Β

Pre-race clinics will be held in the Monty Ballard YMCA parking lot starting at 8am on the date you select when register. Inclement Weather Protocols

Your child's safety is of the utmost importance to the Race Crew and we take every precaution to ensure a safe and fun event for all kids. We have an extensive inclement weather plan based on a variety of factors. Below I have included some of the basic information from that plan but note that specific circumstances can dictate updates and changes.Β

Β

The race will proceed as scheduled rain or shine and no decisions regarding cancellation, rescheduling, or course changes will be made until the morning of the event. If a major weather event occurs or is being planned in the days leading up to the event we may decide a decision needs to be made prior to event setup but that will be only for extreme cases, not forecasted rain or storms.

Β

On race morning, depending on the specific situation, there may be changes to the course. For example, if there is standing water on the bike course the decision may be made to change the event to a duathlon (run, swim, run).Β

Β

Lightning within 10 miles of the race site may cause delays in the race beginning. Our plan dictates that there cannot be a ground lightning strike within 10 miles of the race site for 30 minutes for the race to proceed. There are protocols in place to delay the start of the event if necessary up to a certain point.Β

Β

Again, these are just some examples and we have pre-planned many potential scenarios. If we need to enact any of the protocols, everything will be communicated to you via email in a timely manner.Β

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Β
SWIM COURSE

125-METERS FOR SHORT COURSE & 225-METERS FOR LONG COURSE

Both SHORT and LONG COURSE use the lazy river with the current turned off. Depth is 30"-40" throughout. SHORT COURSE participants swim counterclockwise around the lazy river to the exit point approximately 125-meters from the start. LONG COURSE participants swim clockwise around the lazy river to the exit which is approximately 225-meters away. Both start and finish in the same location but go different directions around the river.

Β
SWIM START

The swim start will stage all athletes in the transition area and a line will be formed by race number and will be walked over to the swim start area by the race crew.

When registering, parents will select an option for their child's swimming ability that we will use to assign the athlete race numbers along with the child's age. For example, 10-year olds will be assigned number 1-100 with those selecting the "advanced swimming ability" as the lower numbers, "intermediate swimming ability" as the middle numbers, and "beginner swimming ability" as the higher numbers.Β

This is a time trial start. This means your child's time starts when they cross the timing mat.Β

Β
BIKE COURSE

2-MILES FOR SHORT COURSE & 4-MILES FOR LONG COURSE

The bike course is completely closed to vehicles utilizing two-thirds of the outer mall loop. Riders will have two wide smooth lanes on the way out, and the same on the way back. Riders are separated by a large cone line down one mile and back. SHORT COURSE participants will complete one out-and-back loop, LONG COURSE participants will complete two. All LONG COURSE participants will be directed to u-turn just before they get back to transition. All athletes should keep cones on their left at all times.

Β
TRANSITION

Transition will have clearly marked in and outs (swim in, bike in, bike out, mount, dismount, run out) distinguished by 20-foot flags. All bikes should be racked in transition by the seat (or kickstand) facing out the direction their number is facing. Check out the TRANSITION SETUP page for details. Every athlete has a specifically assigned spot in transition that matches their race number. All athletes must have their numbers on their bikes to enter it into transition. See RACE NUMBER PLACEMENT page for details. Other required numbers include the bike helmet number, run bib number, and temporary tattoos on the child's arms. One parent, wearing the provided wristband, is allowed to accompany their child pre-race into transition. When transition closing announcements are made all parents must clear transition. After that, the only people allowed in transition are athletes, volunteers, staff, and race officials. Bikes cannot be claimed until the last rider has finished and exited transition for the run. We will announce when transition is open to retrieve bikes. ALL BIKES & OTHER EQUIPMENT MUST BE REMOVED FROM TRANSITION BY THE TIME NOTED ON THE EVENT SCHEDULE. ANY BIKES/EQUIPMENT LEFT AFTER THAT TIME MAY BE MOVED TO ANOTHER UNPROTECTED LOCATION SO WE CAN SET UP FOR THE NEXT EVENT.

Β

Virtual Race

If you can't make the live event for any reason, there are several options to complete the event virtually to earn race swag. Virtual events are a great way to get active out in your own neighborhood without having to travel to a live event. You can race on your own time, on your own course, and still compete against those who will be racing at the live event.

Completing the event is easy, simply swim, bike, and run on your own time at your favorite location then submit your results (see below for submission instructions). The distances can be anything you are comfortable with but we recommend a minimum of 125-meter swim, 2-mile bike, and 1-mile run. If swimming isn't an option substitute another workout like more running, calisthenics, etc.Β

Β

Putting together a small group to complete the virtual race together?

Contact us to see what kind of extra support we can offer including signage, results and timing, etc. to make your small group virtual race feel more like a live race experience.Β

Β

Submitting Your Results

Results can be submitted for an event completed anytime in April. The submission period begins at midnight on April 1st and end at 11:59pm on April 30th. The simplest way to submit your results click the button below to go to the Results page, click the Submit Virtual Results button, and complete the form listed. There are a few different ways to submit your results, check out the RunSignup tutorial for Submitting and Managing Virtual Results.

Volunteer Info

VOLUNTEERS MAKE OUR EVENT POSSIBLE!

Groups or individuals, we need all the help we can get to produce a great event! Volunteers are an integral part of producing successful events. Without the help of hundreds of volunteers at each event, we wouldn’t be able to continue producing these great events. The Houston Kids Triathlon makes for a great opportunity to support your community, earn required services hours, fundraise for your group or non profit, and build teamwork and camaraderie. If you have any questions please contact support@mynegativesplit.com.

GROUP DONATIONS

Large groups help to fill our volunteer voids quickly, especially during setup and teardown. For this, we offer group donations as a way of saying thank you and urging everyone to return in the future. Each year we allocated $3,000 to donate to volunteer groups for the Typhoon Texas Kids Tri. Over the past 12 years,Β  we have donated over $100,000 to local groups and nonprofits for volunteering at the event. Join us today!

EligibilityΒ - Only groups/clubs/teams that follow these steps will be eligible for donations.

Β

Step #1Β - Contact the Volunteer Coordinator via the Contact This Race link at the bottom of the page or send an email to support@mynegativesplit.com. We'll add your group's name to the registration form so your members can easily select the group name.Β

Step #2Β -Β Have all group members signup online via the Volunteer Registration page and make sure they select your group's name when prompted.

Step #3Β - Work all designated shifts, following all instructions given by Volunteer and race site Coordinators.

Β

Donation RulesΒ - Below is how we determining donation amounts given post race. Please keep in mind this is volunteer work and was not meant to be "paid." These are donations meant as a thank you for helping at our event.

Β

Once a team/group/club/organization hits 10 volunteer shifts worked they get $10 per shift worked. For example if 16 volunteers from a group signed up and completed 16 shifts they would receive a check for $160 for their group.

Β

Checks will be mailed once volunteer numbers and hours are verified. Please allow 4-6 weeks for check delivery. Those that don’t follow the instructions provided by the volunteer coordinator will not be counted towardsΒ group totals.
