I Ran the D 5K

I Ran the D is an annual 5K race that celebrates Detroit’s deep-rooted sports culture while promoting health and wellness in the community. Bringing together some of the world’s most passionate sports fans, the race supports programs that strengthen local youth initiatives and create lasting community impact.

Proceeds from the race directly benefit the Detroit Sports Commission’s Living Legacy Initiative, which focuses on advancing youth literacy, promoting active lifestyles for young people, and expanding access and pathways for girls in sports.

Since its inception in 2001, the Detroit Sports Commission has played a pivotal role in strengthening the region’s economy by attracting and hosting hundreds of regional, national, and international sporting events — including the 2024 NFL Draft and the upcoming 2027 NCAA Men’s Final Four — while ensuring all events deliver long-term community benefits.

The Detroit Sports Commission’s Living Legacy Initiative ensures that every sporting event hosted in the region leaves a positive impact on the local community. To date, the Living Legacy Initiative has invested more than $1.7 million into local programs across Detroit.

The I Ran the D 5k course offers runners a one-of-a-kind experience, weaving its way through downtown Detroit’s most famous landmarks, starting at Comerica Park, winding through the historic streets of Brush Park, and past Ford Field, before finishing back at Comerica Park, where runners can take a victory lap inside the ballpark around the outfield wall. 

Registration includes a unique race experience through downtown Detroit, a custom hooded long-sleeve running shirt with all four Detroit pro sports teams, a custom bib, and a finisher’s medal.

Participants can have someone else (friends or family) pick up for them at any of these pre-race locations.

Simply tell them which location you chose in your registration option and send them in to pick up for you.

 

Race day Packet Pick-up Details

Saturday May 9, 2026 6:30 am - 8:15 am

• For a $15 fee during registration or as as an add-on purchased prior to May 6th you may arrange to have your packet available at Comerica Park
• We HIGHLY suggest NOT waiting till race morning as there will be long wait times and the possibility of missing the start of the race.
• Due to the size of this race, and an expected crowd of over 7,000, race day packet pickup is only available on a limited basis
• Here's how you can add that service to your registration.

Comerica Park seats more than 40,000 fans and has a plethora of parking options close by.  

Pre-Purchased Parking link will be available by 3/1/26 so you may pre-pay.  We will post here as well as email it out to everyone.

Annual Race Celebrates Detroit’s Sports Legacy and Community Pride,

 Runners, walkers, and sports fans will take to the streets of downtown Detroit on Saturday, May 9, 2025, for the 8th annual ‘I Ran the D’ 5k benefiting the Detroit Sports Commission (DSC). A mainstay of the Detroit sports community, the annual race celebrates the city’s deep-rooted sports culture while supporting programs that strengthen local youth initiatives.

Proceeds from the race will once again benefit the Detroit Sports Commission’s Living Legacy Initiative, which focuses on advancing youth literacy, promoting active lifestyles for young people, and expanding access and pathways for girls in sports. To date, the Living Legacy Initiative has invested more than $1.7 million into local programs across Detroit and the region.

The 2026 ‘I Ran the D’ 5K builds on the success of last year’s race, which welcomed more than 5,500 participants from 7 countries and 34 states and thousands of spectators, celebrating 3.1 miles of Detroit pride and raising funds to support charitable causes aligned with DSC’s mission.

‘I Ran the D’ showcases Detroit as one of the nation's premier sports cities, uniting passionate fans of the Detroit Lions, Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Tigers, and Detroit Pistons alongside runners, families, and community leaders. Mascots and celebrity starters from all four professional teams will once again be on hand to cheer on participants and add to the race-day excitement.

 

The race is part of a broader portfolio of annual events supporting the DSC’s mission, including the Detroit Sports Commission Golf Classic and the Amazon Prep Kickoff Classic, which has served as Michigan’s premier season-opening high school football showcase for more than 20 years. These events complement a growing slate of major national competitions coming to Detroit—including the 2027 NCAA Men’s Final Four and 2028 NCAA Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournament, as well as the 2029 U.S. Women’s Amateur, 2031 U.S. Women’s Open, and 2034 U.S. Open all taking place at the historic Oakland Hills Country Club—underscoring the city’s continued rise as a premier destination for world-class sporting events.

Participants will weave their way through downtown Detroit landmarks, starting at Comerica Park, winding through the historic streets of Brush Park, and past Ford Field, before finishing back at Comerica Park, offering runners a one-of-a-kind experience to take a victory lap inside the ballpark around the outfield wall.

Q: What time does the race start?

A: The race will start at 8:30 AM with wave starts releasing every 10 minutes to keep the course less congested. Walkers will start in the last wave at 9:00 AM. 

Q: Can I still register? 

A: Yes! Registration will remain open until the start of the last wave around 9 AM. 

Q: Can I run with a stroller? 

A: We are allowing strollers at this year's I Ran the D event. We ask that strollers line up in the back of their assigned wave to ensure everyone's safety. Upon completion of the 5k, strollers will not be allowed into Comerica Park. There will be a stroller parking area near the end of the corral where you can retrieve your stroller upon completing your victory lap around the ballpark! Please be sure to take your children with you into the stadium:)

Q: What is a virtual race?

A: Virtual races have become more and more common. Register for the virtual race and run your 5K anytime and anywhere. The virtual race gives you an opportunity to still participate in the event if you cannot make the race in person. Your swag (T-Shirt & Medal) will be shipped starting the week before the race. You can submit your times to the virtual results leaderboard between May 1- May 14.

Q: Do we get to run on the field at Comerica?

A: As long as the WEATHER permits participants will have access to walk the warning track after finishing the 5K. 

Q: Are dogs allowed? 

A: Due to safety and insurance reasons, we ask that you leave your four legged friends at home. 

Q: When/where can we pick up our packets?

A: Please review the Packet Pick Up information. If you cannot make one of the pre-race pick-ups and need to pick up on race day you can add this to your registration by watching this quick tutorial video here.

Q: Can I register for the event if I am located in Canada?

A: YES, we would love to have our Canadian fans join us. Please factor in time to cross the border on race day. Unfortunately, due to the volatile tariff issues still ongoing between the USA and Canada we will not be offering shipping to Canada in 2026 as we do not wish to add any additional expense to your participation.

Q: Can I switch to a virtual race after I have already registered? 

A: Yes you can switch to the virtual event up until Wednesday, May 1st at Midnight. To do so watch this short video on how to manage your registration and transfer events. 

Q: Can I add race day pick-up, packet shipping, or other add-ons after I have registered?

A: Yes, you can go back into your registration and manage registration add-ons until May 6th at Midnight prior to packet pickup starting. To do this watch the quick tutorial video here. The in-person packet shipping deadline is Sunday April 14th. Once that deadline has passed, you must pick up your packet at one of the pre-race packet pick up locations or you can add race day pick up for $15. 

Q: Can I transfer my registration to someone else?

A: Yes, you can transfer your registration to another participant anytime before May 7th at Midnight. There is a $10 fee to transfer your registration to another participant. To do this watch the quick tutorial video here.

When will I receive my tickets and how do I access them?

Tickets purchases will be loaded into the MLB Ballpark App approximately 10 days before the game date and will be under the email you registered wtih.

Two (2) Pistons Experience Packages which includes:

• (2) 200-Level Corner Ticket to Detroit Pistons vs. Atlanta, Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at Little Caesars Arena

Steps to Access Your Tickets:

• Download the Detroit Red Wings mobile app (available on iOS and Android) for the easiest access.
  • Log In: Sign in with your Ticketmaster account credentials used to purchase the tickets. This will be the email you provided in race registration.
  • View Tickets: Navigate to the "Tickets" or "My Events" section within the app or website.
• At the Arena: Display the ticket barcode on your phone for scanning at Little Caesars Arena. 
  • It is recommended to add your tickets to your mobile wallet (Apple Wallet or Google Pay) before arriving at the arena to avoid connectivity issues. 

Your concession credit will be accessible as a separate voucher in the app under "Mobile Waller"
