About Kona Chocolate Run

Join us for the ultimate Chocolate Run, hosted by Michigan's newest state park, Belle Isle, Detroit, Mi.   Offering distances for every level: 5k, 10k, and 15k. Perfect for novice and seasoned runners, this event promises a great running event and an indulgent celebration of all things chocolate. Be among the first 600 participants to register and secure one of our highly coveted Chocolate jackets, a prized keepsake of this sweet adventure.  This year's course will be flat as a pancake and incredible views of the Detroit Skyline, the Ambassador bridge, new Gordie Howe Bridge and Windsor Canada on the back side of the course.   As if that was not enough no traffic to deal with on the course and plenty to do downtown after.  

 

Crossing the finish line gets sweeter with our exclusive finisher medals, but the real treat lies just beyond the course—the best chocolate buffet you can imagine. This decadent buffet features an array of stations, each dedicated to chocolate in its gloriously varied forms: steaming hot chocolate, freshly baked chocolate treats, expertly carved chocolate right in front of you, creamy chocolate milk, rich chocolate ice cream, an interactive chocolate dipping station, assorted chocolate candies, and more.

 

Adding to the excitement, exceptional awards await the top three finishers in each age group and the overall top three participants. Whether you’re racing to beat your personal best or to savor every chocolatey moment, the Chocolate Run is an event you won’t want to miss. Come for the run, stay for the chocolate!

AMENITIES

The Kona Chocolate Run offers a suite of amenities that enhance the race experience for all participants. At the heart of the event is the incredible Chocolate Buffet, accessible to all runners, featuring a variety of chocolate delights to indulge in post-race. Each participant receives a custom finisher medal as a memento of their achievement. The first 600 registrants are rewarded with exclusive jackets, while those who register afterward receive long-sleeved shirts. Additionally, athletes who tackle the 15k Double Up challenge are honored with special Kona winter hats. Competitive spirits are also recognized, with awards for the top three finishers in each age group and the top three overall. For those looking to take a piece of the race day home, the Kona store offers exclusive goods for sale, providing an opportunity to buy unique Kona-branded merchandise​ like winter lighted hats, and more. 

Two lucky winners will receive the "Golden Medal" at the finish line and will win a Stanley mug and free entry into next years event.  This will be announced at 11:00 a.m.  Must be present to win, we will not mail this out.

AGE GROUPS
Top 3 in each age group. Applies to both male and female categories. 

  • Age group awards will be presented in 5-year age increments. In cases where age groups do not meet minimum standards to fill a category, event management reserves the right to combine age groups into 10-year increments. 

Awards may be distributed following the event at a designated time announced by the event announcer. Additionally, there may be a published awards ceremony where athletes will be individually recognized and celebrated.  Please note that awards will not be handed out ahead of time under any circumstances. However, participants have the option to order their award online for a small shipping and handling fee.

COURSE

A stellar venue for the 2024 version of the best Chocolate Run in Michigan, if not the entire region.  The most picturesque and flattest course to date. 

  • You begin on Central with an immediate view of the downtown Detroit skyline with the GM Ren Cen front and center as well as the great fountain. 
  • Straight across the bridge down the Grand Prix pit lane, to the south tip of the island.  Detroit and the river will be on your Right. 
  • As you approach the south tip you have the Ambassador Bridge and new Gordie Howe bridge right and front of you as you make your turn at the south tip you now have the river and Windsor Ontario skyline on your right. 
  • Then a Left turn to head up and around the incredible fountain. 
  • Back down the other side of pit lane, past the Belle Isle Casino and over another bridge. 
  • Then a few quick jaunts down a few of the picnic streets, past the historic clock tower and Belle Isle Conservatory and Aquarium before following the Grand Prix course back to Central Ave for a 600m straight away to the finish driveway. 

Flat and more flat describes this course and no more wet cold grass for staging and the best Chocolate buffet anywhere awaits you just past the finish line. 

 

10k and Double Up 15k folks will just continue to another Left, across another great bridge and back out on course.

Added by high demand, The best themed running events Virtual is here.  You may not be able to enjoy our incredible fun, inspiring venues but you can still enjoy out awesome athlete amenities.  You run your course on your time and we send you your bib, finisher medal and other athlete amenities offered for the event you register for.  Have fun on your time, enjoy the Kona athlete amenities along with it.

POLICIES / RULES

Sorry - No Refunds for any reason unless Military or death in family.  

 

As we strive to create a fair and enjoyable experience for all participants, support crew, and our dedicated team at 3 Disciplines, we have established a set of policies and rules to uphold the integrity and safety of our events.

 

With over 25 years of experience and expertise in producing events across 25 states and over 1300 races, our attention to detail sets us apart in the industry.

 

First and foremost, we maintain a zero-tolerance policy for the use of profanities or any form of verbal abuse towards anyone, including our incredible support crew and volunteers. Respect and positivity are paramount in creating a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all involved.

 

To ensure fair competition on the bike courses, blocking, drafting, and center line violations will be penalized accordingly.

 

Safety is our top priority, and therefore helmets are mandatory for all athletes participating on the bike course. Helmets must be securely fastened before mounting the bike.

 

While headphones are permitted on closed courses, they are allowed in only one ear to ensure athletes remain aware of their surroundings and fellow participants.

 

Filming of athletes by following them in vehicles is strictly prohibited and will result in disqualification due to the potential danger it poses to everyone involved.

 

Regarding refunds, we understand that unforeseen circumstances may arise, but refunds will only be granted in cases of death in the family or military deployment/moves. Events beyond our control, such as pandemics or emergencies, do not qualify for refunds. Event insurance is available for those seeking additional coverage in case of unforeseen circumstances.  No Refunds for any reason outside of our control.  

 

Regarding transfers, as always transfers are welcome within the SAME CALENDAR YEAR.  We no longer accept deferrals or transfers to another year.  You may transfer to another event within the same year before the 30 day out period, within 30 days no transfers allowed unless military or death in family for $15.  You may transfer your entry to another person for that event for $15.  Military deployment/transfer or death in the family will allow deferrals into the next calendar year only.  

 

We prioritize the safety and well-being of all participants, regardless of their experience level. Decisions are made with consideration for the entire event community, and our safety record reflects our commitment to thorough planning and execution.

POST EVENT

At the Kona Chocolate Run, after crossing the finish line, athletes are treated to a grand chocolate experience—an extensive Chocolate Buffet comprising 8 to 9 stations, each brimming with a variety of chocolate delights. The National Honor Society Support Crew, donned in full chef attire, elevates the service, making the culinary experience even more special for participants.

 

The buffet includes a range of chocolate stations, such as baked goods, expertly carved chocolate pieces, and items dipped in chocolate. There are also stations dedicated to scooped treats like ice cream, and a plethora of other chocolate-infused creations. This Chocolate Buffet is not just about indulging in sweets; it's a well-organized feast that complements the festive and celebratory atmosphere of the event.

 

After enjoying the Chocolate Buffet, participants can collect their awards, which are available for pickup, adding a tangible recognition of their achievements on race day. This entire experience underscores the event's focus on community and celebration, further enhanced by the meticulous service provided by the young volunteers in chef gear, who add an element of gourmet sophistication to the post-race festivities.

 

Two lucky winners will receive the "Golden Medal" at the finish line and will win a Stanley mug and free entry into next year's event.  This will be announced at 11:00 a.m.  Must be present to win, we will not mail this out.  

RUN

5k, 10k, Double Up 15k and kids sweets fun run 800m.

The Kids 800m sweet fun run will start us off just after the national anthem. They will follow a closed coned course out and back to the finish line where all of the adult athletes will be cheering them on as they cross the finish line. 

The 10k & Double Up 15k will start immediately following the last kids finisher.  10 minutes later the 5k run will begin.  The course is dog and stroller-friendly.  The course will be marked with chalk, cones, signs.  The course will be a 5k route so 10k and Double Up 15k athletes will complete 2 and 3 loops, each time coming by the hundreds of friends, family and spectators cheering them on.  

Aid stations await you at every mile, stocked with refreshing water and the replenishing Gatorade Endurance Formula.

OVERVIEW

The Kona Chocolate Run is a festive fun chocolate-filled event for the entire family with some great running thrown in to start the morning off.  This event includes a variety of races: a fun run, 5k, 10k, and a unique 15k Double Up event where participants can run both the 10k and 5k consecutively. The event is known for its vibrant and fun atmosphere, welcoming participants of all abilities.  Chocolate enthusiasts are of course welcome.  

 

Held in November, the Kona Chocolate Run transforms the venue into Michigan's largest chocolate party. 

 

The event features an 8-station fully served chocolate buffet, including hot chocolate, chocolate baked goods, chocolate candies, chocolate dipping, chocolate popcorn, chocolate milk, and other chocolate treats, all amidst the festive holiday atmosphere. For runners, the event provides a scenic course that starts with a flat stretch, moves through a beautiful residential area with rolling hills, and finishes with a great jaunt up the chocolate chute.

 

Race amenities include custom medals, the highly coveted chocolate jacket to the first 600 registered, a long sleeve shirt after that, and for the Double Up 15k participants, a special Kona winter hat. Participants are encouraged to register early due to perks like reduced fees and best race swag around.
