About LewisGale Salem Half Marathon, 8K and Kids Fun Run
The City of Salem, known as "Virginia's Championship City", has hosted numerous NCAA National Championships as well as many other national and international sports tournaments. In 2016, we decided to branch out and bring that "Championship" mentality to running! The races start and finish at the Salem Farmers Market in downtown Salem, VA and take you on a scenic tour of Salem through neighborhoods, Roanoke College, and the downtown business district.
We have partnered with Blue Ridge Racing, the area's leading road race management organization to produce these events. In addition to managing the LewisGale Salem Half Marathon, Virginia's Blue Ridge 8K, and the G&H Contracting Kids Run, Blue Ridge Racing handles the race management for the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Marathon and other regional events.
As an added bonus to running the LewisGale Salem Half Marathon, you will have the opportunity to earn the Virginia's Blue Ridge Triple Crown medal if you also complete the Foot Levelers Blue Ridge Full or Half Marathon (in April) and the Star City Half Marathon (in November) within the same year. Is three half marathons too much for you? Run the Blue Ridge Star-K (or Relay), Salem 8K, and Star City 10K to earn the Triple Crown Sprint Series medal. This exciting race series rewards runners in the valley with some serious race medal bling and bragging rights!
2020 FAQ
Q: I've already registered for the in-person race. What are my options?
A: When you visit www.salemhalfmarathon.com a pop-up window will appear where you can declare your intentions for the 2020 race. (If the pop-up doesn't appear, scroll down a bit and the choices are listed. You may have to log into your RSU profile). You have four choices:
- Transfer to the virtual race.
- Defer to the 2021 race at no charge.
- Donate your entry to the race for the long-term sustainability of the race. A portion of the proceeds will be given to the Salem Food Bank.
- Request a refund.
Q: Once I select my option from above, when will my registration be transferred/deferred/refunded?
A: We're still working out the details on all this with Runsignup. We recommend that you make your selection by October 1. On October 2, everyone who selected the virtual option will be transferred to the virtual event, if not before. On or before October 19, everyone who selected the deferral option will be deferred and everyone who selected the refund option will be refunded their entry fee.
Q: I deferred last year's race (2019) to this year. What now?
A: We will allow a second deferral at no cost THIS YEAR ONLY or you may choose to transfer to the virtual event.
Q: I paid full price for the race. Will I get refunded the difference for the price of the virtual event?
A: Yes. Refunds in the price difference will be issued when racers are transferred to the new event.
Q: I'm choosing the virtual option. How do I get my shirt, medal, Chick-fil-A sandwich, Olde Salem Brewing Co beverage, Fleet Feet coupon, etc.?
A: The Chick-fil-A sandwich will be in the form of a gift card, and the beer coupon will be attached to your bib. The Fleet Feet coupon will be in your packet. You have 3 options for getting your goodies:
- You can stop by City Hall on Saturday, October 10 between 9am and noon to pick up all your swag and get a finish line picture taken.
- You can stop by the Salem Parks and Recreation office at 620 Florida Street, Salem VA starting Monday, October 12 between 8am and 5pm to pick it up.
- You can opt to have it shipped to you at no cost. We appreciate pickup for runners that are local to reduce our costs.
Q: What about the Triple Crown? I was really looking forward to getting that medal!
A: If you register for or transfer to the Virtual Half Marathon OR if you donate your entry fee to the race, then you'll still be eligible for the Triple Crown Medal!

Ambassador Program
The LewisGale Salem Half Marathon is excited to continue our running ambassador program. Running ambassadors are people that have run our race or are interested in our race and have a following on social media. We depend on word of mouth marketing as one way to spread the word about the race. By using ambassadors we can encourage more people from around the region to come out to the LewisGale Salem Half Marathon.
Expectations
Running ambassadors must have a love of running in a race, have a blog, or significant social media following and goals that align with our vision. In addition, ambassadors are expected to
- Post content to your audience a minimum of three times leading up to the race (at least one month spread apart)
- A post race report within one month of finishing the race
- Participate in our private ambassador Facebook discussion group
- If at another race where Salem Half Marathon has a representative at the expo, help out at the expo for one hour. This can be as simple as standing in for our staff while we take a nature break or doing a Facebook live segment for our race or your blog, etc.
Benefits
In exchange for helping us promote the LewisGale Salem Half Marathon our running ambassadors will receive
- A free race entry
- Swag bag to give away to followers
- Coupon code to share with your followers on social media
- We'll help our audience get to know you better (ex. congratulations to @Jane Smith, one of our rock star ambassadors for running her first marathon, Go Jane!)
- Link from our ambassador page to wherever you like, ex. Facebook, your blog, Instagram
- Private group chat for ambassadors
Application
We're not looking for people that have it all. We are looking for a variety of different folks, young, old, fast, slow, close to Salem and far away. We want people that are broadcasting to different online channels and to their own local running groups. So just because you're not on Instagram or Snapchat or whatever the latest social media platform is, doesn't mean we don't want you. 2025 applications are now open! The application deadline is Sunday, March 9th.

Course Maps
The LewisGale Salem Half Marathon and Virginia's Blue Ridge 8K courses all start and finish on Main Street at the Salem Farmers Market, where your family and friends will line up the streets to cheer you on while you sprint towards the finish line. We designed these races to encourage everyone to get out and run and also in a way that are spectator friendly. The course was designed for all runners who like a challenge. While some of the race is flat, we have hills thrown in that add a challenge with rewarding views.
COURSE CHANGE FOR 2024:
Due to the Colorado Street Bridge Replacement Project, there is not enough room for both runners and traffic to safely flow over the reduced width. Therefore, we have come up with an alternative route for the 2024 event. This reroute incorporates as much of the original course as possible, with the exception of the portion along Colorado Street and the Roanoke River Greenway. You'll even get to run more in the beautiful historic downtown neighborhood and pass by Lake Spring Park a second time. See the course map below for the new route.
The course will be open for 3.5 hours and portions of the course are open for vehicular-traffic.

COVID-19 Precautions
Salem Half Marathon cares about the safety of its racers, volunteers, staff, and spectators. We are encouraged by the recent local trends in dropping case numbers, and we hope that continues in our area. Out of an abundance of caution, we have chosen to implement the following precautions and guidelines for race day:
- Packet Pickup will be held outdoors behind Olde Salem Brewery.
- We encourage all runners to wear masks before and after the race including in the corrals and finish line area.
- All City Employees will be wearing masks and other PPE, regardless of vaccination status. Volunteers will be encouraged to wear masks as well.
- We encourage racers to complete a self evaluation before the race. Please do not come to the race if you are experiencing COVID symptoms or if you have had a known exposure to COVID-19 as defined by the CDC within the last 10 days.
- Aid stations will be self-serve. Water and electrolyte drink in individual cups will be placed on tables for runners to grab.
- Medals will be handed out instead of placed around the neck of finishers.
We thank you for your cooperation in helping keep everyone safe!
