100 Mile Ride
The 100-mile century ride includes all of the beautiful scenery of the other rides, as well as a jaunt through Old Orchard Beach and Saco to the quaint village of Kennebunkport. This is truly a spectacular century ride characterized by flat to rolling terrain and beautiful ocean views. This ride takes 7-9 hours to complete. Note this route includes a three-mile crossing of the beautiful Scarborough Marsh on the Eastern Trail, crossed twice, both outbound and inbound. The trail has a fine, packed gravel surface which is suitable for most riders on a road bike exercising awareness and caution. The remainder of the ride is on paved public roads.
25 Mile Ride
The approximately 25-mile ride begins by following the six-mile paved co-located South Portland Greenbelt/Eastern Trail from the ride start to Bug Light and then on to Wainwright Recreational Fields. It then follows Maine’s beautiful shoreline back through Cape Elizabeth and South Portland and finally ends back at the ride's start. This route does not include any gravel segments.
40 Mile Ride
The 40-mile ride features coastal views and sightings of three state parks, gorgeous beaches, and even a few museums. This ride includes the paved co-located South Portland Greenbelt/Eastern Trail as well an out-and-back on the Eastern Trail through the beautiful Scarborough Marsh, the largest salt marsh in Maine. It takes 4-5 hours complete and includes flat to rolling terrain.
62 Mile Ride
The 62-mile metric century ride follows the route of the 40-mile ride with an additional coast through the summer resort town of Old Orchard Beach to picturesque Camp Ellis. This ride usually takes 6-7 hours to complete and includes flat to rolling terrain.
About the Eastern Trail
The Maine Lighthouse Ride is the signature fundraising event benefiting the Eastern Trail Alliance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that builds, maintains, and promotes the Eastern Trail.
The Eastern Trail is a visionary plan for a long-distance walking and bicycling trail that will one day extend entirely and continuously off-road from Casco Bay in South Portland (where the Maine Lighthouse Ride begins!) to the Piscataqua River in Kittery. Today, you can cycle across the Scarborough Marsh, walk through the woods of Saco or Kennebunk, and enjoy more than 20 miles of completed off-road, multi-use trail in southern Maine. The remainder of the Eastern Trail is on-road and co-located with the East Coast Greenway. In 2022, the trail was inducted into the Rails to Trails Conservancy’s national Rail-Trail Hall of Fame.
The Eastern Trail is a collaborative effort between nonprofit organizations, municipalities, and public agencies that together build, maintain, and administer various aspects of the trail. Maintaining the existing trail and completing the remaining miles will require significant funding, many partners, and the support of trail users like you. How can I avoid the gravel section?
If you would prefer to avoid the gravel section, you have two options:
1. Register for the 25-mile ride.
2. Register for the 40-mile ride and skip the out and back section that crosses the Scarborough Marsh near Black Point Road. Here’s how: When Highland Ave intersects with Black Point Rd (ME Route 207) take a left instead of the planned right. This will allow you to continue to Ferry Beach without traversing the three-mile gravel section twice. Be advised this will make your 40-mile ride shorter.
