Our Why and Mission

Together, we will find a cure.

Founded in 1995, our organization was created to offer support to the brain tumor community and to raise funds to advance research into brain tumors. We fund scientific research and investigator-initiated clinical trials focused on finding a cure for brain tumors. Through the years, we have proudly awarded over $3,040,000 in research grants. We believe seed funding will foster the continued development of emerging concepts, treatments, and therapies. We hope the projects funded by the SBTF might be a springboard from which researchers will garner additional data resulting in publications and recognition which has the potential to secure support from larger funding agencies.

The Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation also hosts support group meetings designed to give patients, as well as their families and caregivers, access to information and resources to aid navigation of the brain tumor journey.

The Foundation has expanded its vision to offer more than $200,000 in educational scholarships to those impact by a brain tumor diagnosis, offer additional support resources, provide patient acts of kindness, and provide Care Bags to current patients undergoing treatment.

"Having been an active participant in the SBTF and team member in the Race for Research for a decade now, I have seen the amazing things the Foundation does for families affected by brain cancer, including myself, and I'm so honored to have been chosen for this award. Thank you SBTF for everything you do!"

~ Annie R, 2020 Voices of Hope Scholarship recipient

"Thank you very much for the card. Laura heads up our brain tumor support group and she told me she had one for me. Things have been really difficult lately and this put a smile on my face. P.S. Thank you for all the work you do on our behalf."

~ Support Group member

"Your generosity and support will have a positive impact on those like Ashley's mother [a 30 year thriver] because it will help to fund much needed brain tumor research, create scholarships for those impacted by a brain tumor diagnosis, support our patient community, and offer hope for a cure. "

~ Steven & Ashley

"The scholarship has allowed me to go back to school to earn my master's degree in occupational therapy. The SBTF is a Foundation that has been close to my heart ever since my mom passed away from glioblastoma in 2016. I am so thankful for the ... fact that I have been able to go back to school and not have to worry about such a financial burden. The scholarship has truly impacted me and helped me so much and I can't thank you enough.”

~ Nicole O, 2021 Voices of Hope Scholarship Recipient

"I chose to support the SBTF because my family and I know what it's like to have a family member with a brain tumor. We know the struggles and so I jumped at the thought of being able to help other people fighting cancer."

~ Caroline R., daughter of a brain tumor survivor

"Why do I support the SBTF? Family. SBTF has treated our family like members of their family. Families stick together through thick and thin to weather the storm."

~Tom G

"We are Voices of Hope in the race to find a cure for brain tumors. The Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation lets me do something to end this terrible disease."

~ Race Participant 2019

"Our NGMC patients and families have been ecstatic to receive support from the Foundation through the program. As a nurse, it has been my honor to facilitate the distribution of funds that have helped our patients buy baby diapers, clothes for rehab, and food to stock pantries."

North Georgia Medical Center nurse, Angie C

Policies

Donation Policy

By making a charitable gift to the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation (SBTF), a 501(c)3 not for profit organization, the donor understands that the SBTF cannot refund charitable donations. For the Race for Research or Muddy Duck Dash, SBTF events, charitable gifts are also non-refundable.

Cancellation Policy

After you have registered for a SBTF event, including the Race for Research, Golf Invitational, Pickleballin' for Brains or Muddy Duck Dash, no refunds are available for any reason. If the event is cancelled, tshirts or other swag for those registered are not guaranteed.

Even if you choose to cancel, SBTF cannot refund your registration fee and donations received nor transfer registration fee and donations to another participant's fundraising for any SBTF events including the Race for Research, Golf Invitational, Pickleballin' for Brains, or Muddy Duck Dash. Registrations will be converted to a donation to the Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation.

The Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation may cancel or reroute an event due to the occurrence of any force majeure event or credible threat thereof, including but not limited to any Act of God, fire, earthquake, acts of civil or military authority, casualty, flood, war, terrorist attack, epidemic, pandemic, insurrection, civil unrest, strikes or other labor activities or any other similar cause beyond the reasonable control of the SBTF including environmental conditions that might threaten the health and safety of event participants, volunteers or staff. In this event, all registration fees will be converted to donations to support our cause and not refunded.

We understand that participants might think, "I can't participate so I want my money back", or "SBTF can just hold on to my donations until I find a time I can attend an event," or "The event is in two weeks and I just decided I can't make  it, but I'm sure the SBTF can transfer my donations to my registered teammate." However, for a nonprofit organization, like the SBTF, it is not that easy.

The production of an event requires months of planning and a significant upfront financial investment on our part. To offer refunds or to transfer participants to another event costs the SBTF and eventually could make it impossible to support our mission to end brain tumors.

We take our commitment to support the cause and our beneficiaries seriously. To that end, we work hard to support every SBTF participant's fundraising commitment. When you register for a SBTF event, we begin preparing the logistics for your participation and paying for your event expenses. If you cancel your spot, SBTF and our research grant program suffer a financial loss.

Unlike many nonprofits that run charitable events, we are in a unique position that we only employ three part-time personnel. Keep in mind that a participant transfer is still not easy for us- as a small staff, a participant transfer disrupts our planning and challenges our commitment to deliver the best events possible.

Privacy Policy

The Southeastern Brain Tumor Foundation is committed to providing an informative and useful website for all visitors and constituents. At the same time, the SBTF is also committed to protecting the privacy of all users of its website. Our websites do not collect personal or identifiable information unless it is provided voluntarily and knowingly. When such information is provided by you voluntarily and knowingly, the SBTF will not sell this information to any third party.

Sponsorship

The SBTF Corporate Sponsors are absolutely amazing!!!

Many of our Corporate sponsors have been with us for more than a decade. Many of our Sponsors have been touched by a brain tumor diagnosis and they can not only talk-the-talk about this disease, but they can walk-the-walk. Not only do we feel their support through Race For Research, but we feel their support throughout the year as they share our passion to work toward a cure for brain tumors & brain cancers.

Please see the image of the 2025 sponsor document. Sponsorships opened January 2025 and include opportunities to combine sponsorships of our SBTF Golf Invitational, SBTF Voices of Hope Scholarships, and SBTF Patient Programs in addition to the SBTF Race for Research. At this time, the SBTF Golf Invitational has passed, those options are no longer available. If you have any questions, you can reach us via email at events@sbtf.org

Deadline to receive full benefits as outlined in the document is September 1, 2025. Sponsorship requests after that date will be accepted, however you may not receive full benefits of the level selected.

If you know the level at which you'd like to sponsor the Race for Research, please submit payment by credit card or direct debit here or you may mail a check. Please email events@sbtf.org for mailing instructions.

Team Spirit

TEAM SPIRIT AWARD GUIDELINES:

The Race for Research Team Spirit Award recognizes the top three teams who display the greatest Team Spirit on race day.  This award recognizes prominent reflection of the team name and why they “race” with the SBTF.  The physical size (e.g. number of team members) is not a factor for judging the most team spirit award.

The Team Spirit Award is judged on the several criteria.  The team displaying the most team spirit carries an uplifting aura about them.  They display a sense of hope, a sense of conviction, and a sense of camaraderie which is not only seen with the eye, but is felt in one’s heart.  The team with the most team spirit evokes “CURE”

          C  - creativity

U –unity (matching colors, reason for participation, etc)

R – recognition of the brain tumor hero/warrior

          E – enthusiasm

Teams will be scored on a 1-5 scale with 5 being the highest score for each category above. The highest points possible is twenty. In the event of a tie, another judge will score the tied teams to determine a first, second, and third place winner.

This is an annual award open to all teams participating in the Race for Research.  The winning team will be recognized during the awards ceremony at the Race and receives a ribbon and plaque… and bragging rights for the upcoming year! Your team’s photo will also be shown on our website as an example of amazing team spirit.

Will you be the next Race for Research Team Spirit Award winner?

We welcome volunteers of all ages at our event. However, we ask that anyone under 18 is accompanied by an adult. We are happy to sign community service forms from high schools, clubs or organizations if you visit the Volunteer Table.

Wall of Honor & Survivor Tree

The Wall of Honor and the Survivor Tree are interactive displays provided by the SBTF on Race day for all attendees to honor brain tumor survivors, brain tumor patients, and brain tumor warriors.

Each interactive display allows individuals to give pause, to reflect, and to share their own personal journey or the journey of a loved one through photos and messages. We encourage attendees to bring photos, messages, posters or other memorabilia to post in the Wall of Honor activity. Push pins and tape will be provided by the SBTF.

For the Survivor Tree activity, we invite you to create beautiful paper butterflies, print the name of your brain tumor hero on the butterfly, then affix the butterfly to the Survivor Tree. Come and watch the Survivor Tree come to life through your involvement in this activity.

Oh, and yes, your memorabilia may be collected at the close of the days' events.
