Dog Friendly Run/Walk

The St. Malachi Church Run is a dog-friendly event.  You should ensure that your dog is prepared to complete the distance in which you are entered.  You must be prepared to be a good pet parent.  All dogs must be on a leash (Non-retractable) during the event.  Based on your pace we ask that you be aware of the other runners.  Be sure to get your "good boy or girl" a drink and a treat at the food tent!

We look forward to having you participate and please "Don't forget your poop bags!"

  • The 5 mile race starts at 10:00am

Where does the race begin?

  • The race will start and finish on the Veteran's Memorial bridge which is adjacent to the Church.

What distances are available?

  • There are two separate races that go off an hour apart.  The first race is a 2 mile race followed by a 5 mile race.  Runners can also select the Combo category and run both races.  Combo participants get the same swag as other participants, shirt, medal and beer, plus a custom combo bib and a medal ribbon slider to commemorate their additional accomplishment.  Both the 2 mile and the 5 mile events are timed.

Are there age restrictions at this event?

  • No, all ages are invited to participate. Children in strollers may participate for free; all other children must be individually registered.

How is this race timed?

  • Both races will be MyLaps BibTag chip timed. This method provides a disposable timing chip on the back of your race bib. There is no need to return your bib or chip after the race.

Where can I see my results?

  • A link to the results on RTRT will be added to the race website's home page approximately one week before the event.  Details will also be included with the pre-race email and QR codes pointing to the results will be posted at various locations on race day.  Race results and photographs will be available through RTRT.   At that link participants can download and print a finisher certificate that is pre-populated with their name and time. Race results will not be on the SMCR website.

Are there pacing restrictions or a course cutoff time?

  • There are no course restrictions or cutoff times. All participants are welcome to take either course at their own pace (running, walking, or a combination). Please note that participants walking at a considerably slower pace than the majority bulk of participants may be asked to move to the sidewalks at police discretion to allow city streets to reopen.

Malachi Ministries

St. Malachi Church, a Roman Catholic parish, located at the corner of West 25th and Washington Avenue, has been serving the marginalized of the near west side of Cleveland, Ohio for over 150 years.  In addition to providing all the services of a typical Catholic parish, St. Malachi provides over $100,000 in ministries to the needy of the area.  Below are brief descriptions of the ministries that are provided.  Additional information about the Church and its ministries can be found at its website www.stmalachi.org/.

Backdoor Ministry serves food Monday through Friday on a carryout basis.  The backdoor ministry began in the 1970s. The number served varies, ranging from 100 – 150 people per day, bringing the total meals served per year to approximately 33,000 meals at a cost of about $165.000.

Monday Night Meal is almost 50 years old, having started in the late 1960s. A nutritious, hot meal is served every Monday night in the parish hall.  The number served varies, averaging 200 meals per night and over 10,000 meals per year at a cost of about $198,000.

Saturday Morning Breakfasts serves a hot breakfast every Saturday in the parish hall for about 150 people, or over 7,000 meals per year at a cost of about $35,000.  Once a month the Church partners with a clothing distribution ministry and passes out clothing and toiletries to the breakfast attendees.  Malachi runners sign up to serve this meal when they register for the run/walk.

Recovery Programs are hosted by the Church.  Two 12-Step meetings are held each week in the school building.  For about 40 years, each spring and fall, the Church offers the Samaritan Ministry Addiction Awareness workshop, a half-day education program on the problems of addiction, its causes and effects, and the recovery process.

Rental and Utility Assistance is provided to those in need on a case-by-case basis.

Youth Diversity Program allows inner-city students to participate in the St. Malachi Church Run/Walk.  This program is in partnership with the YMCA.

West Side Care Creation Team organizes monthly clean-ups of the near west side neighborhoods of Cleveland.

Related Malachi Ministries were begun at St. Malachi and became independent as they grew and flourished.  The Church provides financial support to these ministries:

Malachi Center is a community and family resource center that was started in 1985. The Center strives to empower individuals to overcome the challenges they face through educational support, social programs, and direct service.

Malachi House is a home for the dying poor and those who have no one able to care for them at the end of their life.  A trained staff and volunteers provide spiritual, emotional, and physical support with the assistance of a hospice team.
