About TURKEY TREK (13.1, 10k, 5k & 2k)

This is not your run of the mill 'Turkey Trot.'  This is the Turkey TREK!  Are you up for the challenge?  Run a steady uphill climb to the summit of the course at the 3 mile mark.  Poised at the top of the hill is the infamous EGG NOG CHUG Challenge where racers (have the option) to chug 5 oz of eggnog.  (Those who 'chug' are entered to win a new pair of shoes!) It's windy and wild at the top and the limitless views are UNMATCHED.  Run the ridge for a mile before starting the more gradual, yet still winding, descent down the east side of the mesa.  Once down the hill, racers encounter a relatively flat straight-away peppered with HAY BALES for the hay bale hop challenge.  Continuing the clock-wise loop back into the park, runners find the final challenge - just one kilometer from the finish: Fill Your Pie Hole Challenge.  A fresh portion of holiday pumpkin pie awaits racers there.  Once the pie is 'down the hatch', the joy of the finish line isn't far away.  Is this a course on which to set a personal record?  Hah!  This is the course to BRAG about completing - with ALL of its holiday-themed challenges.  Are you ready to conquer it?

We know that some of you require a bit more training before attempting the 10k loop.  5k and 2k distances are also offered, with a small 'taste' of the full course of challenges!

For those of you who eat hills for breakfast and wash them down with egg nog on the daily, a bigger challenge is offered at the 2025 event.  New this year, the HALF TURKEY!!  The HALF TURKEY visits all the challenges offered to the 10k Trek runners, and adds some mileage to get you to the 13.1 mile distance.  HALF TURKEY finishers receive a MUG at the finish line to commemorate their accomplishments!

Start/Finish Description:   Here is how to find the start of the 10k and 2k distances:  (Of course, they are marked on race day!)
At the most southern part of the parking lot in this park, you'll see a passageway in the fence.  It is very narrow - the width of one person.  When you walk through the fence, you'll see the 8 foot wide concrete path on which we run this course.  Turn to the east (take a left after entering through the narrow passage.  Walk east until you see what looks like a wooden 'gate' embedded into the fencing on the north side of the trail.  This isn't more than 30-50 feet from the initial passageway. The gate isn't actually a working gate, it is just a wooden component of the fence. That wooden gate is the FINISH line for all events except the 5k.

5k Runners - New in 2026 - 5k Runners will start at the north end of the expo near the turf soccer fields.  They will run a PURE out and back course to the north and east, returning exactly to where they started.  5k is the ONLY distance that will finish at the northern arch/mats.  All other distances will finish on the south side of the expo on the trail system, just as we've done for the past 15 years.

10k Runners, from the gate, continue walking EAST for 13 concrete 'seams'  Count the seam at the gate as 0 and then count 13 more seams. At the 13th seam, you've found your START line for the 10k.  Start at that line and run WEST, in a clockwise route.  You'll pass the finish line about 100 feet into your run and you'll cross over the start location again about 100 feet from your finish.  That little 100 foot section is the only 'cross over' of your course.

HALF TURKEYS - start from the EXPO and run up and out the soccer fields, connecting with the end of the 10k course.  You'll loop through the 10k start line and the finish line (approx .4 mile in to your race) and then continue along the 10k route until the back side of the hill around mile 5 where you'll turn east (left) and run under Virgil Way on the Ralston Creek Trail along the golf course.  Run east to about mile 8.3 where you'll turn around and come back west on the same route.  When you run back under Virgil Way and connect with the 10k course, you'll be at about mile 11.5.  Finish the race by running through, up, around the hay bale challenge and the fill your pie hole station on your way to the finish line where your commemorative mug will be waiting!

Sneakers For Funds

We’re excited to announce that we’ve partnered with Sneakers4Funds to provide you with a socially responsible way to donate your gently worn, used or new sneakers and running shoes to a good cause we support! The sneakers will help benefit Growing Home as well as give a hand up, not a handout, to micro-enterprises in 25 developing countries. The athletic shoes will be kept out of landfills where they can take decades to fully decompose. Visit Sneakers4Funds to learn more!

It's super simple! All you need to do is bring your lightly worn athletic shoes and sneakers to the race (either race day or at packet pick up). We collect them and mail them and a donation is made to Growing Home!

Please donate only gently worn, used, and new athletic shoes.  These sneakers, trainers, and other athletic shoes will be worn again by people in developing nations, so please make sure there are no holes or soles falling off and that they are in wearable condition.  Dress shoes, sandals, brown shoes, flip flops, cleats, etc. and other shoes that are NOT athletic shoes will NOT be accepted.

Please tie your shoes together or put a rubber band around the pair!
