Plogging
NEW IN 2024, Wallis Sands Half Marathon will offer PLOGGING!
We are offering a limited number of plogging spots in the 2025 Wallis Sands Half Marathon. These 20 entries will have a reduced entry fee, unique bib numbers, special recognition at the finish, and will be provided trash bags and numbered bag tags. Ploggers can drop full bags at water stops along the way for pick-up from our crews, or bring your bag back to the finish. We'll have a fun, friendly weigh in at the finish. While we're all rewarded by leaving Rye a little better than when we arrived, ploggers aren't eligible for speed awards, so we'll have a special prize for the most weight collected. Please, no rocks ;)
What is Plogging?
Plogging is a combination of jogging with picking up litter, merging the Swedish verbs plocka upp (pick up) and jogga (jog) gives the new Swedish verb plogga, from which the word plogging derives. It started as an organized activity in Sweden around 2016 and spread to other countries in 2018, following increased concern about plastic pollution. As a workout, it provides variation in body movements by adding bending, squatting and stretching to the main action of running, hiking, or walking. An estimated 2,000,000 people plog daily in 100 countries and some plogging events have attracted over 3,000,000 participants.

REFUND POLICY EXPLANATION
We have established a no refund policy. Please click here for more information and to learn about the options to insure your entry fee.
Uninsured Registrations
There are no refunds given for standard uninsured entries under any circumstances.
Deferrals are not offered but may be granted under certain exceptional circumstances (e.g. pregnancy, military duty, death of a loved one) at the discretion of Event Management. Deferral requests must be submitted in writing to info@tri-maine.com no less than 30 days in advance of an event. Any deferral granted may require the athlete to pay an administrative fees when they apply the deferred entry the following year. There is generally a time limit on when a deferred entry, often offered in the form of a coupon, can be used.
Why do we have this policy? As event organizers, we have to take on substantial financial risk each year by paying large deposits on venues, police, t-shirts, vendors, and paying our staff to plan for the events among other expenses. We forecast up to eight months in advance and take on expenses based on our projected numbers. Offering refunds on the base entry fee puts the entire event at risk, since we have no way of truly knowing how many people may drop out, after we have committed to large costs. It also creates substantial administrative work at times when we are focused on race prep. We are participants ourselves, so we understand the frustration around losing an entry fee if plans change. However, we would not be able to put on a high quality race if we had the uncertainty of refunds affecting our decision-making.
That being said, we also recognize the value of peace-of-mind that comes with the ability to insure an entry and receive a refund. Therefore, we have created an option for athletes that want to lock in a bib number, but also want flexibility if they can’t race. Basically, by paying an additional fee, you are insuring your entry fee. Obviously, this is not something that everyone wants or needs, but we are offering the option to those who see flexibility as a priority.
The vast majority of endurance events do not offer any refunds at all, under any circumstances (especially the ones with high entry fees). We think it makes more sense to give you the option to decide what you want.

VIRTUAL
WHAT IS A VIRTUAL EVENT?
A virtual event is an event that takes place anywhere you can accomplish the components. We keep a running list of who is participating in the event, results and allow you to track your progress and post photos. The guidelines are set for the different disciplines or distances, it is up to each participant to honestly report completion times or miles covered. Many virtual events have an online platform where pictures can be uploaded by participants (we do this). We’re using the RaceJoy and RunSignUp to allow runners to track their race progress.
At the completion of the event, a t-shirt, medal and other gifts are usually shipped (shipping and handling is included in the price) to the finisher. The best part about a virtual event is that you can cover the distances anywhere and anytime you want. Your favorite course can be used. People can cheer you on. You can use your phone or other GPS-based app to capture and submit the data to the organizer.
We will always offer this as an option, in this “new normal” where physical distancing is crucial. Think of it though, you can participate when you have time, in your own space, and still be part of the event (and of course get free cool swag). This type of event allows us to move forward using today’s technology and tools as well as add a division where people can’t make the event or don’t feel safe joining us in person can participate. Virtual events will not take over in-person events, but it is a new and exciting addition to our ability to reach more people and give everyone the opportunity to take part in events this year.
