Join us for the 3rd Annual 1911 Initiative's “Beat the Bridge 5K Challenge” Scholarship Run/Walk, where every mile you move helps us go the distance for college-bound students. Hosted in partnership with the Village of Matteson, this race is all about purpose, progress, and community pride.

This year’s theme, “Beat the Bridge,” was inspired by one of the most unforgettable moments from last year’s race—the Matteson Bridge at mile 3. As runners approached the final stretch, the bridge became a true test of endurance, pushing participants physically and mentally. What many thought would slow them down became the highlight of the race—a challenge that brought out determination, energy, and pride in every participant. This year, we’re embracing that moment and inviting everyone to take it on.

We’re proud to share that we’ve already registered over 150 runners and walkers, with a bold goal of reaching 1000 participants in 2027!

As a grass roots organization, we don’t rely on large corporate funding—we’re powered by everyday people like YOU. Your support directly funds scholarships and paid internships, helping deserving students prepare for brighter futures.

At the 1911 Initiative, we share a deep commitment to community—one that aligns powerfully with the legacy of Black Greek Letter Organizations (BGLOs). We salute each of you for your continued dedication to service, scholarship, and uplifting our people.

BGLOs have long been the backbone of HBCUs and campus life across the country. In times when Black students had few places to gather, grow, and lead, your organizations lit the path—and continue to lead the way today.

To honor that legacy, we’re offering a special opportunity at our 2nd Annual 1911 Initiative 5K Scholarship Run/Walk. This year, you can run (or walk!) in style by repping your organization’s colors on race day.

Here’s How It Works:

Register as usual for the 5K.
Select your team name that reflects your org and colors (i.e. Blue and White Team, Purple and Gold Team, etc).
Once your team hits 50 registered participants, you’ll receive our signature race shirt in your org’s colors.
If your team has fewer than 50, you’ll still receive our standard race shirt.
So round up your ships, Sorors, and Frat brothers—and let’s make this a celebration of unity, legacy, and purpose.

We’ll see you when you “Go Over” that finish line.

This isn’t just a race—it’s a run with a purpose. Every step supports scholarships and paid internships for college-bound students, many of whom are navigating their journeys with limited resources but unlimited potential.

🔥 This year, we're turning up the excitement with a brand new race shirt design and a huge 5" finisher medal—both symbols of your commitment to education and community. Please note: registrations after May 15, 2026 are not guaranteed a race shirt, as orders have to be placed in advance. We're serious about creating a top-level 5K experience that celebrates impact, achievement, and pride.

We don’t receive big corporate funding. What makes this event special is YOU—our grass roots supporters, families, runners, and local champions who believe in giving back.
