Larry Prout Jr (The Bear) Courage Fund 5k and 1mile fundraiser

We are excited for our 4th annual Larry Prout Jr (The Bear) Courage Fund 5k and 1 mile run/walk fundraiser! This year's race will be held on Saturday, July 25th. 

Proceeds from this event assist University of Michigan Mott Children's Hospital families whose loved ones are enduring complex medical issues with gas, food, utilities, clothes, emergency auto and home repairs, and many other basic necessities, that become hardships when a family is facing the medical crisis of a loved one. 

PRICING 5K: $30 until July 12th.  $35 from 7/13 to 7/24. $40 on race day. Online registration only on race day. 

FAMILY/FRIENDS special pricing: $3/person discount when registering 3 or more people at the same time. Discount automatically applied during registration. Valid only for the 5k. Valid until 7/12. 

PRICING 1 MILE: $25 until 7/12. $30 from 7/13 to 7/24. $35 on race day. Online registration only on race day. 

T-shirts are guaranteed with entry by end of day July 12th. Supplies available as they last after that date.

COURSE: This year we'll be at the Pinckney High School complex. It features a beautiful course. More details coming soon.  

PACKET PICKUP: Race day morning Jul7 25th, 8:00 am to 9:50 am at the Registration/Check-in Tent. Race packets include: event and sponsor information, race t-shirt, and bib

VIRTUAL RUNNERS: Register by July 12th to be guaranteed a t-shirt. Price is $30. Your packet (including t-shirt and event and sponsor information) will be mailed as the race approaches. You can post your results by going to the results tab at the top of the page and selecting virtual results. Results must be submitted August 1st. 

RESULTS will be live during the race and posted on this website. The race will be professionally timed by the Michigan Running Foundation.

Mott Children's Hospital families whose loved ones are enduring complex medical issues with gas, food, utilities and many other basic necessities, that become hardships when a family is facing the medical crisis of a loved one.   To date we have awarded over 160 grants totaling over $125,000.  This 5k/1 mile fundraiser is our largest fundraising initiative for 2025. 

The Larry Prout Jr. Courage Fund 5k/1 mile fundraiser offers a unique opportunity to grow your business with exposure through the event and face-to-face engagement with the community. Help make a positive difference in supporting individuals in our community with medical and/or physical disabilities and with patients at Mott Children's Hospital who endure life threatening complex health issues.

2025 COURSE DETAILS: 5k Run/Walk will begin and finish on the track. Participants run to the main field and go around baseball diamonds, tennis course, parking lot, then back toward stadium where you enter the main field/course again.  You'll do this a total of 4 times.   After completing the fourth lap you'll reenter the stadium and finish on the race on the track. 

The one-mile participants do all four laps on the track.

Donate $100 and you'll receive a FREE entry! Discounted entry fees for donations of $75 - $25!

Free entry is valid until 7/12 then it's a $30 (5k) and $25 (1 mile) discount off the entry fee with a $100 donation.

Larry Prout Jr. was born on June 11, 2001 at the University of Michigan's Mott Children's Hospital. He has endured over 100 surgeries due to spina bifida, cloacal extropy, and a massive omphalocele, as well as many other complex medical diagnosis. With support from his family, friends and community, Larry has been able to live a productive and fulfilling life. Larry is involved with several non-profits by fundraising, public speaking, volunteering and as a board member. Larry has been a community volunteer working hard for many of our local nonprofits raising virtually thousands of dollars since he was 14.

Larry has received the Arc Livingston Arc Angel Award, the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Pete Schmidt Courage Award, the State of Michigan Livingston County United Way Young Person of Distinction Award, and the United States House of Representatives Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition-- "in recognition of outstanding an invaluable service to the community" award.  He was also nominated for the C.S. Mott Children's and Von Voiglander Women's Hospital - Evan Newport Joy Award and the Mott-Von Voigtlander Hospital - Office of Patient Experience Outstanding Volunteer Recognition Award.  

Larry fights hard to keep a positive attitude.  He says the best way is to help others, and to remember that we are all better together, we must all never give up and never lose hope, and every day is a gift.  Larry and his family know the hardships of many hospital stays and recoveries at home, and the financial burden this can bring.  Because of the help and support Larry and his family have received over the years, the Prouts' wanted to give back by helping families with sick children and young adults,  and by supporting individuals with disabilities.  Together with our community and Mott Hospital partners and friends, Larry hopes to make an impact on the lives of many.
