About Paint the Town Pink

Come out to Switchyard Park to support breast cancer awareness and support services for breast cancer patients and survivors. During the entire month of October, we will Paint the Town Pink! Local businesses can sign up to get their windows painted pink with ribbons and breast cancer awareness messages. Cancer Support Community is partnering with the City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation department, IU Health, and IU School of Medicine to provide resources and educational material to local businesses.

Awareness Saves Lives—Melody Martin started the Breast Cancer Awareness walk over 25 years ago, because she believed had she gotten her diagnosis sooner, her outcome may have been different. We remember and honor Melody's mission in life—to empower women to identify breast cancer sooner, to have the best chance of survival.

On October 26, 2025 come to Switchyard Park from 1:00 - 4:00 pm for Paint the Town Pink celebration. The event will feature a Breast Cancer Survivor Ceremony, followed by a walk on Switchyard Park's half mile or one mile walking trail. Through the event educational materials and a resource fair will be available. Food trucks will be onsite with some delicious local flavor. This event is free and open to the public. Paint the Town Pink shirts are available through pre-registration.

Donations to the walk support a local breast cancer support group, SAVI bras for radiation patients, and oncology massages for breast cancer patients through Cancer Support Community.

Melody's Legacy

A gift of $5,000 — whether made all at once or pledged over time (for example, $1,000 per year for five years) — is a powerful way to support local breast cancer patients and survivors while investing in the long-term future of Cancer Support Community South Central Indiana (CSCSCI).

As a member of Melody’s Legacy of Hope, you’ll ensure that free programs like counseling, education, and survivorship resources remain available to those impacted by cancer in our community.

A Lasting Impact
A portion of every gift supports CSCSCI’s endowment fund, helping to sustain these life-changing services for generations to come. This legacy carries special meaning to Melody’s family and to our entire community, honoring her memory by offering hope to others.

Member Benefits
As a supporter of Melody’s Legacy of Hope, you’ll receive:

  • Special recognition at the Paint the Town Pink event
  • An invitation to an exclusive annual donor reception
  • Behind-the-scenes updates with survivor stories and mission moments
  • A commemorative gift item
  • And more opportunities to stay connected to the lives you’re helping transform

Together, we can honor Melody’s legacy and ensure that hope, strength, and support continue to be available to every person facing cancer in South Central Indiana.

Resources & Awareness

We've gathered educational flyers, and created social media graphics and text for anyone to use to promote breast cancer awareness, screening, and prevention. All of these resources are available to download in a google folder.

Survivor Ceremony

Join us for one of the most meaningful moments of Paint the Town Pink—our Breast Cancer Survivor Ceremony, beginning at 2:30 PM.

During the ceremony, each survivor will be invited to step onto the stage, share their name and length of survivorship, and be honored by the community. As survivors exit the stage, they will receive a small tribute gift as a token of recognition and support.

We ask all survivors to begin lining up near the stage a few minutes before the ceremony begins so we can start on time.

Last year, we were honored to present embroidered Paint the Town Pink scarves to 34 survivors who joined us. This year, we look forward to celebrating even more stories of strength, resilience, and hope.

Walk Info

“The story of our mom is a story of a breast cancer survivor and a true warrior. Our mom's journey with breast cancer wasn't just about her personal battle; it became her mission to help others and to spread awareness about breast health.”

~ Melody’s daughter, Kim Martin.

Melody Martin started the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in 1998. She was inspired by her own cancer diagnosis and believed that had she caught her cancer earlier, she may have had a different outcome. Melody's mission became empowering women in their healthcare with knowledge and information, encouraging screenings, prevention, and general awareness of breast cancer—"Awareness Saves Lives".

This year Paint the Town Pink will have an honorary walk in the tradition that Melody started over 25 years ago. The walk will take place at the lovely switchyard park walking trail. There are two distance options, a half mile trail and a one mile trail. Walkers may choose which route they would like to take. Honorary signs for survivors and loved ones who have faced breast cancer will be available along the walking trail. The walk is hosted in partnership with City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Department.
