FAQ

Where and when is the Rocket City Marathon?

The Rocket City Marathon Weekend takes place at the Von Braun Center in downtown Huntsville, Alabama each year on the 2nd full weekend in December.

The Rocket City 10K, 5K and 1 Mile Family Fun Run run on Saturday Morning and the Marathon and Half Marathon run on Sunday.

Can I run the marathon if I am under 18 years old?

Yes, a parent or legal guardian must register runners under 18 so the parent/guardian can sign the waiver.

I'm running late, can I pick up my packet on race day?

We have a limited packet pickup available on race day for a fee.  All fees are donated to the charity group that will be managing race day packet pickup.  This must be purchased in advance of picking up your packet! To purchase, sign in to your RunSignUp account, go to your Profile, select Manage Registration, and then select Add-Ons.

Race day packet pickup will be from 5:30am - 8am on Sunday morning for those that purchased this option.

Can someone else pick up my packet for me?

Yes. If you can not make it to the Expo/Packet Pick-up during official hours, a friend or family member may pick-up your packet for you.  They must present the attached form completed along with the proper IDs as noted.

Does the Marathon have pace groups?

Yes. Pacers are available for the Marathon distance only.  See this link for details

What are the slowest (and fastest) paces allowed for each race?

With multiple races starting at different times, the notion of cutoff times can be daunting. We will have different sets of sweepers for the early start and regular start, but here is a simple list of slowest pace times for each race.

Marathon Early Start (6am): 7 hour time limit = 16:01/mile

  • NOTE: Marathon Early Start has a fastest time allowed. The fastest pace for early starters is 13:44/mile until the halfway point. After 13.1 miles, early starters will be allowed to run as fast as desired.

Marathon Regular Start (7am): 6 hour time limit = = 13:44/mile

Half-Marathon (9am): 4 hour time limit = 18:18/mile

10K (7am): 2 hour time limit = 19:19/mile

5K (9am): 1 hour time limit = 19:19/mile

  • NOTE: Cutoff times are a reflection of roads re-opening and not having police support. If you are slower than the cutoff times, you will  need to move to the sidewalks and be careful crossing intersections. Course markings may be removed after the official sweepers so you should be prepared and know the course route. We will keep the finish line open as long as possible.

Can I change my Shirt Size or other information after I've registered?

You can change your shirt size or other details of your registration through your RunSignup Profile. To accomplish this, sign in to your RunSignUp account, go to your Profile, select Manage Registration, and then select one of the following:

  • Giveaway - to change your Shirt size
  • Add-Ons - to order a Spectator Medal, ITab or Race Day Packet Pickup
  • Questions - to adjust your answers to other registration questions (emergency contact, estimated finish time, etc)

How do I get a refund if I cannot attend? Can I transfer my entry to someone else?

Our policy states that we do NOT offer refunds or deferrals.
You can transfer your registration, as a gift, to another runner BEFORE September 1st.  "Selling your bib" online is illegal. If you see this online it's most likely a scam.

Can I change from one race distance to another?

You can switch from one race distance to another, provided there are still open spots in the race you are transferring into BEFORE December 1st. To accomplish this transfer, sign in to your RunSignUp account, go to your profile, select Manage Registration, and then select Transfer.

ROCKET CITY MARATHON ANNOUNCES FIRST-EVER PHILANTHROPIC PARTNERSHIP
WITH HUNTSVILLE HOSPITAL FOUNDATION

Proceeds from 2025 race weekend to help fund therapy playground for pediatric patients

HUNTSVILLE, Ala.  – The Huntsville Track Club and Huntsville Hospital Foundation (HHF) announced today a new long-term philanthropic partnership between Rocket City Marathon Race Weekend and HHF, marking the first official charitable alignment in the marathon’s 49-year history.

Proceeds from the 2025 Rocket City Marathon Race Weekend, happening Dec. 12–14, will help fund the development of a therapy playground for Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children’s Pediatric Therapy and Audiology Department, now located at 107 Governors Drive SW, Unit 101. While the playground is the first focus of this new partnership, future proceeds will continue to support key funding priorities identified by HHF – particularly those that benefit pediatric patients and families served by Huntsville Hospital for Women & Children.

This outdoor therapeutic space will support children with physical, developmental or sensory challenges who visit the hospital multiple times each week for therapy. More than just a playground, this innovative environment will promote physical recovery, emotional well-being, and developmental growth in a joyful setting.

“This partnership represents a natural alignment between health, wellness and community,” said Eric Fritz, Rocket City Marathon race director. “Our runners come to Rocket City to challenge themselves and celebrate fitness, and now they’ll also have the opportunity to make a real difference for children and families in our community. We’re proud to run for a cause that’s both meaningful and local.”

“Rocket City Marathon and Huntsville Hospital have both been part of this community’s fabric for generations— the marathon in its 49th year and our public hospital for more than 130,” said Sarah Savage-Jones, president of Huntsville Hospital Foundation. “This partnership brings together two groups with a shared commitment to health, access and well-being for all. This new therapy playground will be a place where children can heal, grow, and just be kids. We’re incredibly grateful to the Huntsville Track Club, every runner and the sponsors who are helping make this vision a reality.”

The 2025 Rocket City Marathon Race Weekend is expected to draw more than 5,000 participants across multiple events, including Friday’s expo; Saturday’s 1-Mile Family Fun Run, 5K and 10K; and Sunday’s premier half marathon and marathon.

Funds raised through this year’s race will play a critical role in bringing the therapy playground to life, in combination with other generous contributions and community donors.

RCM Kids

Looking for the Kids Marathon?  The Rocket City Kids Marathon is an extension of the 1 Mile Family Friendly Run/Walk for Grade School aged Children.

Kids can be part of the Rocket City Marathon excitement by participating in the 1 Mile Family Friendly Run/Walk, and selecting "YES" to the Kids Marathon option for children in grades K - 8! Students become marathon finishers on race day by completing the final mile of a cumulative marathon training program in the weeks leading up to the race.

The Rocket City Kids Marathon is a 14-week running program that encourages kids to complete a full marathon (26.2 miles) by running approximately 1.75 miles per week. The final mile is completed in grand fashion as each child finishes their marathon distance in front of cheering fans, friends, and family at the Official Finish Line of the Rocket City Marathon inside the South Hall of the Von Braun Center!

The goal of the Rocket City Kids Marathon, is to Inspire and Encourage children to be active on a regular basis through running and physical activity.

Participants must train for the last mile by running a total of 25.2 miles in various increments. Miles are accumulated individually by each child either at home, at school, with parents, friends or siblings.  Coaches, PE teachers, and parents can help by encouraging the child to run and track their miles on the mileage log which can be found on the Kids Marathon RunSignUp main page. Mileage Boosters are held each month in September, October and November to encourage the participants to increase their mileage.

Simply sign your child up for the 1 Mile Family Friendly Run/Walk and answer YES to the Kids Marathon question to sign them up and join in the fun!

Note for past participants of the Rocket City Kids Marathon:  there is no longer a "family reunion area" for the children in the kids marathon. Parents are fully responsible for ensuring their child is picked up at the finish line upon completion and are encouraged to run with their child.

RCM Kids Mileage Log

Each runner/walker will be at a different level - and that is perfectly fine! Your goal is to get in at least 1-2 miles each week, depending on your training program.  Ask your coach to write in your recommended weekly mileage goal.

Look at your weekly goal recommendation to plan your mileage for the week. For example, every Saturday, plot your runs/walks for that week. Circle the miles that you actually ran and be sure to adjust your schedule if you miss a run. Have an adult initial each day you ran/walked. At the end of the week, add it up to see how far you’ve traveled. Just think, by race day, you’ll have run/walked to another city! How cool is that?

The event goal is to log at least 25.2 miles prior to race day. The final mile is completed in Grand Fashion as each child finishes their marathon distance in front of cheering fans, friends, and family inside the South Hall of the Von Braun Center.
