About SARR Great Greenway Marathon Relay

Get ready for 2027!  After a 3rd straight sell-out, we expect even more teams this year.  Last year's revised course turned out to be so popular we going to do it again.  Still 26.2 miles, still a little hilly, still a whole lot of fun!

In celebration of the great Howard Peak Greenway System, you and your team can cover 26.2 miles of this beautiful, scenic, shaded course that explores the many parks along the Salado creek at the edge of the Texas Hill Country in San Antonio.  You can have a minimum of 2 and up to 5 runners per team and there are several categories for you to compete against other teams.  This is a point-to-point course and each leg of the marathon relay explores a different section of the Greenway trail.  There are 5 Relay Legs that vary in length, so you will have to strategize on which of your runners to put on which leg.

The race starts at the Rim Trailhead off Vance Jackson Road and ends at the McAllister Dog park trailhead where a celebration and medals will be waiting for your team.  Complete map and instructions can be found under the Runner Race Guide menu tab.

If you have never participated in a point-to-point relay before, you are in for quite the adventure.  Part of the fun is making sure your runners get to their relay points on time and then meeting your last runner at the finish line to celebrate as a team.  So pick your team carefully.  Runners of all abilities are welcome.  (Must be at least 14 years old to participate.)

This race SOLD OUT the last 3 years, so register early to secure your spot. Shirts are only guaranteed to the first 500 registrants prior to January 10th, after January 10th, shirts or shirt sizes are not guaranteed.

Registration fee is per person. All members of the team must register separately and either create a team or join an existing team.

FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (On Revised Course)

Q. Why is the course changing just a few weeks before race day?

A. Part of the course was torn up last weekend as part of the ongoing highway construction at 1604 & IH10.  Neither the Parks Department nor SARR was notified that part of the trail would be removed and inaccessible for several weeks.  We started making revised plans as soon as we found out.

Q. Will there still be 5 legs to the relay?

A. Yes, there will still be 5 legs but the distances of each leg has changed from the original course.  You will need to review the new course and relay legs to determine if you need to reassign your team members.

Q. What are the main differences between the original and revised course?

A. The start line has moved from the Mainland Trailhead to The Rim Trailhead.  We are still running on the Salado Creek Greenway but will be incorporating some different sections than the original course. The race still finishes at the McAllister Dog Park.

Q. Are there any advantages to this new course?

A. Yes! The course is now mostly downhill  Also, it should be easier to drive to and from the different relay spots since they are located closer together.

Q. Are there any new features on this new course?

A. Yes! We have added another hill for Legs 3 and 5, but it’s much shorter than the hill for Leg 1.  Also, Legs 3 and 5 will be running across the Boardwalk, which is a wooden bridge across a marsh – very scenic but be careful, it can get slippery when damp.

Q. If I don’t like this new course, can I get a refund?

A. Since this change was out of our control, we are not offering refunds.  Your team will get the same distance and same fun experience as the original course.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (General)

Q.  Do I have to have 5 runners on my team?

A.  No, you can have anywhere from 2 to 5 runners per team.

Q.  If I have less than 5 runners, is my team eligible for category awards?

A.  Yes, all teams are available for awards.  However, it is assumed that teams with more runners will have an advantage over teams with fewer runners.

Q.  If I have less than 5 runners does that mean some of my runners have to run more than one leg?

A.  Yes, all teams have to run the 26.2 miles but you decide which of your runners run which legs.  For example, if you have 3 runners on your team you may want to have Runner A run Legs 1 & 2, Runner B run Legs 3 & 4, and Runner C run Leg 5.  Alternatively, you could have Runner A run Legs 1 & 4, Runner B run Legs 2 & 5, and Runner C run Leg 3.  Whatever works best for your team.

Q.  Can I run the entire marathon by myself?

A.  No, this is a team event and you must have at least 2 runners per team.

Q.  Are dogs or strollers allowed?

A.  No, due to insurance requirements, any team that has someone run with a dog or stroller will be disqualified from awards.

Q.  Is this a closed course?

A.  No, the Greenway is open to the public, but it is expected that pedestrian and bike traffic in February will be subdued.  Please be courteous to others on the trail.  We will have signs indicating to others that a race is in progress.

Q.  Will there be shuttles to take runners between relay spots or to the start or finish line?

A.  No, part of the adventure of a point-to-point relay is coordinating getting your runners to the right place at the right time.

Q.  Do teams need to supply their own baton?

A.  No, teams must use the official batons because the batons will have a timing chip on them.

Q.  Are all runners timed?

A.  Individuals are not timed.  We will track when teams start and when they finish.

Q.  Will there be packet pickup the morning of the race?

A.  No.

Q.  What if one of my runners becomes injured or needs help during the race?

A.  Find a course marshal or notify fellow runners to send for help.  We encourage runners to carry their phones during the race.  (Great for selfies, too!)

Q.  Can a team use a different relay spot to handoff the baton?

A.  No, all teams must use official relay spots for baton handoffs.  There will be Relay Monitors at each Relay Spot to track teams coming through.

Q.  Is there a time cutoff?

A.  Yes, the race will officially close 7 hours after the start.  The course will remain open since it is open to the public, but time tracking will end after 7 hours.

Q.  What if I want to run in the race but don’t have a team?

A.  Check our event Facebook page for teams looking for runners.

Q.  What if there is bad weather?

A.  The race will take place as scheduled unless there is lightening or flooding that prevents runners from safely participating.

Q.  Will there be a post-race party?

A.  YES!  Please have your entire team meet at the finish line to cheer in your last runner and get your team medals.  There will also be food, beer, and a DJ to keep the party going while teams finish throughout the day.

Q.  Is there an age limit on participants?

A.  Yes, all runners must be 14 years of age or older.
