About St. Petersburg Distance Classic

Join us for our St. Petersburg Distance Classic on Florida’s west coast overlooking Tampa Bay. With a USATF certified Marathon (Boston Qualifier), Half Marathon, 10K, and 5K, plus Virtual options, we offer something for everyone.

Back again in 2027: a variety of musical entertainment along the courses. Also, pacers for the marathon and halfathon to help athletes achieve their goals.

ALL four race courses are the same for the first two miles – heading north into Snell Isle. While 5K participants turn around at mile 2 and return towards the finish line, all other participants head north and around Coffee Pot Bayou before returning to North Shore Park.

The Halfathon and Marathon head south along the waterfront, through our bustling downtown, and onto Central Avenue, which features a dynamic mixture of the best local shops and cafes. Watch for an abundance of huge murals on Central Avenue’s building walls as St. Petersburg is a genuinely well known haven for artists of all types.

At Mile 10, the Halfathon and Marathon courses split at the Pinellas Trail. The half marathon participants head east back towards the waterfront, and the marathon runners head west to achieve their marathon mileage before returning to the waterfront finish line.

The St. Petersburg Marathon was the first ever 26.2-mile race staged entirely in St. Petersburg in 2019. The marathon course has been accurately measured per USATF certification standards and certified (FL19019TY) and is therefore a Boston Marathon Qualifier.

For our out-of-town athletes, our award winning, white-sand beaches provide the perfect setting to relax and recover. Ideal overall temperatures (56° – 71 °) make this a perfect spot for a mid-winter vacation wrapped around a long-distance run or walk.

Finally, we offer four virtual options for athletes unable to join us on-site: marathon, half marathon, 10K, and 5K. Visit our Virtual Runs page for more information.

All aid stations will be supplied with Vaseline.

We do not offer gels on the course because of the potential G.I. issues they may cause for athletes who have not trained using the same brand and flavor. BRING YOUR OWN GELS!

Medical support is available from ambulances stationed along the course, and at the finish line. If you need medical assistance, the ambulances will be mobile and able to respond.

Entertainment on the Course

Three years ago, we were granted an exemption to the City of St. Petersburg's Noise Ordinance, meaning we were allowed to provide musical entertainment on the course.

With all our courses running into and around exclusive residential neighborhoods, we booked Alvaro Buenrostro to perform. Besides being an accomplished endurance athlete, he is a virtuoso violinist with the Tampa Bay Symphony. We guessed that IF Alvaro woke any of the local residents, it would be to the pleasant sounds of his violin.

At other parts of the course, we recruited other solo performers, including a drummer, a flautist, and a saxophonist. In our commercial areas on the halfathon and marathon courses, there are less noise restrictions, allowing us to hire deejays to provide upbeat music, as well as the Second Time Arounders Marching Band on Central Avenue.

Volunteers

I would like to volunteer. How can I do this?

Thank you for your inquiry! Come be a part of the support system for your running community, and the out-of-towners who join us. Your time, energy and support are invaluable to all of us! Students can also earn community service hours during our races. Please go to the Volunteers page to sign up.

What is the Volunteer Fundraising Opportunity?

In an effort to give back to our community, we invite small, non-profit groups to adopt an aid station during each of our races. Any non-profit group of 5 - 10 volunteers will receive a post-race donation of $250 per aid station. This is a fun way for running clubs, youth athletic teams, school groups, and other charities to participate in our community events while earning funds for your organization.

If your group would like to participate, please register NOW! These are offered on a first-come basis and may fill up quickly.

Charities

What charities are you affiliated with?

The St. Petersburg Distance Classic is a family-owned and operated race. Most of the revenue generated covers expenses, and, hopefully, some profit, so we may continue to operate. Earning our living in this sport allows us to give back to our community in a variety of ways:

1) Unlike some other singular-cause events where all the proceeds go to one non-profit, we donate cash to several local, micro non-profits such as running clubs, youth athletic teams, etc., that support our races with their volunteers.

2) We often provide comp entries as raffle items for auctions at churches, schools, fundraisers, etc., and we donate modest amounts of cash when our athletes raise funds for their pet projects.

3) Through our races, we provide exposure to other fundraising events via Facebook posts and emails.

4) Our biggest area of charitable endeavor has been to provide our race management services and time, pro bono or partial pro-bono, to non-profits that stage races. In prior years, we did this for the Partners For Life Police Appreciation Run. More recently, we helped the Celma Mastry Ovarian Cancer Foundation increase participation by 50% for its One Step Closer to the Cure 5K / 10K / 1 Miler. We helped a fellow race director stage her Sunrise Run for three years. We have also offered our time or equipment when applicable, such as volunteering at Gasparilla and the St. Pete Road Runners 5K Beach Series.

5) Our absolute most satisfying charitable endeavor was to create and stage the “Tampa Bay for Boston Memorial Run.” About 3 weeks after the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013, we hosted 800 athletes in St. Petersburg for a candlelight vigil and memorial run, raising $15,000 for the bombing victims through The One Fund Boston.

Finally, for each individual athlete who participates with us, we offer the opportunity to achieve goals they once thought impossible.

As you can see, we LOVE being a part of the Tampa Bay running community and thoroughly enjoy being in a position where we can help in many ways.

Finisher Medals & Awards

All finishers in the Marathon, Half Marathon,10K, & 5K Run & Walk earn finisher medals to commemorate their achievement.

Awards are provided in each race, as follows:

Overall: Top 3 Male/Female
• Masters (40+): Top 3 Male/Female
• GrandMaster (50+): Top 3 Male/Female
• Age Group: Top 3 Male/Female in Standard 5-Year increments

The 2027 Finisher Medals have not yet been designed, so we are providing this photo to show how gorgeous our first two medals were in 2019 and 2020. Due to the pandemic, new finisher medals were NOT designed for 2021 and 2022.

Rya, our award-winning Creative Director, wanted to feature three key elements in an artistic representation: our trademarked running starfish, sunshine, and water, all of which showcase what our hometown St. Petersburg Distance Classic is all about.

Race Week Info

Registration & Packet Pickup

PACKET PICKUP:  for the convenience of our runners, we will have several packet pickups before the race. We strongly encourage you to pick up before race day to avoid long lines.

Exact Dates, Times and locations will be announced as we get closer to race day.

RACE WEEKEND DIRECTIONS: The start/finish line for the St. Petersburg Distance Classic is at North Shore Park; it is easily accessible at St. Petersburg’s waterfront, just north of the Vinoy Resort. If you need to Google or GPS North Shore Park, please use 901 N Shore Dr. NE, St. Petersburg, Fl 33701 as the address.

If you are picking up for a group, it helps us tremendously if you have all the names written on a sheet of paper. This will expedite the process and keep the line moving. Extra points for having them in alphabetical order by last name!

We try our best, but we can not guarantee T-shirt sizes on race weekend. When you register, the shirt size you choose gives us an idea of how many T-shirts we should order per size. We place our order at least three weeks before race day to allow for shipping and printing. We add a percentage to account for the runners who register after placing the order. We hate to disappoint, but we don’t have a crystal ball to predict what size T-shirts the new registrants will require. Due to the likelihood of attrition, we provide shirts on a first come basis to those athletes who show up. So, come early!

Review

This was my first 5k, and I walked in the fitness walk. My friend and I were the last two to finish that walk, and I was very happy to do that.
Everything seemed to go well, I was very happy that you had a 5k walk. I just wish that there were more walks and some longer ones to progress to, thanks again for having a walk for those of us that are just starting to get in shape.
– Maurine Jones, Largo, FL

Reviews

“As one of your virtual marathoners (got my first few miles in yesterday morning here in WI), I want to tell you what an awesome, awesome job you are doing.  The race information you provide is the best I’ve ever read – thorough, easy to understand and covering just about everything. Thank you for putting this together.  The work load must be enormous. If we lived closer, I would definitely participate in some of your other races.  I’m proud to be one of your virtual runners and so thankful for the wonderful charity work you do. Again, thank you.”

- Debbi Segina, a proud member of the Adams County Running/Walking Club

“If you hate crowds, Nepal is a great place to run! Just not in the cities. 7:42 moving time, about 30 hours total elapsed (for the first 13.1).”
– Craig Hablewitz, Virtual Runner in Nepal

St. Petersburg Halfathon

The St. Petersburg Halfathon features an aesthetically varied course, as it tours through exclusive waterfront neighborhoods, our downtown waterfront, and Central Avenue, home to an eclectic combination of local shops, galleries, and museums.

Musical entertainment, from solo performers to marching bands, spread out over the course will help the miles pass by.

This is a very flat half marathon, and should be a fast race for all.

Review

“I have run many races (all distances) and many marathons (28-29). I know that putting on a race is not easy; putting on a marathon is a tremendous undertaking. The traffic control was excellent; I just can’t praise the volunteers enough – they are wonderful – we runners couldn’t do it without them. There was lots of water, Gatorade, etc. on the course, and great food afterwards (and my husband enjoyed the beer). So thank you for everything. Enjoyed running your race. Again, congratulations on doing an excellent job.”
