Trash Free Shenandoah

Join us for a morning of trash pickup and river cleaning. We will provide boats and equipment to clean up the river and landing between Burners Bottom (Our Trip 3), and Bentonville Boat Landing.

The Trash Free Shenandoah is a massive, watershed-wide cleanup of the Shenandoah River involving dozens of organizations and hundreds and hundreds of volunteers. This one-week long, cleanup "blitz" is organized by our friends at the Potomac Riverkeeper Network. And this year, as in past years, they've asked our local Anti-Litter Council to help coordinate key cleanup locations in Warren County.

Schedule

08:30 – Meet at Downriver Canoe Company. Check in with Mark on the deck.

09:00 – we will get fitted with paddles and PFDs and load up on a bus to take us upriver to Burners Bottom.

09:15 – Start paddling and picking up trash.

Noonish – We will aim to finish by noon.  Depending on how fast we paddle, we may finish the trip at Hazard Mill, which will give us about 4 miles of river cleanup.

Weather

We plan to pick up trash rain or shine.  It looks like we may have a few showers roll through with temps in the low 50s.  Come prepared for the weather.

What to Bring:

• Clothes appropriate for the weather.  It will be cool and possibly a little wet.
• River sandals or sneakers for foot protection (required); flip flops don’t cut it. We will probably be in and out of the boats.  We highly recommend old sneakers.
• Plenty of water or sport drinks (No glass containers please.)
• Some snack foods or maybe a picnic lunch.
• A Ziplock or waterproof bag for your precious phone (we sell waterproof phone pouches you can take photos through). And don’t forget a small trash bag to help keep the river pristine.
• An eyeglass leash may save those expensive glasses from a watery grave.
• A towel and change of clothes for the ride home.
• In fact, don’t take anything on the river you can’t afford to lose or get wet.

Where to Park: You are welcome to park in any of the lined spaces in the grass in front of our shop. If that parking area is full, we also have a large overflow parking lot to the left when you enter. It is a large grassy field; we just ask that you park with consideration to others as this area is not as clearly lined. DO NOT PARK NEXT TO THE SHOP WHERE THE VANS AND BUSES PULL AROUND. We will ask you to move and you will look very silly trying to park there.
