FAQ

Here are some answers to our most frequently asked questions. Don’t see the info that you need here? Drop us a line at TRIthePARKny@gmail.com.

Can I help my kid in the transition area? Before the event, the transition area will open at 7:00am. You will have ample time to help your athlete set up their biking and running gear. Once the race has started at 8:00am, only athletes and volunteers are allowed inside the transition area. We will have volunteers inside who can assist your athlete and for safety purposes, need to limit the number of people within the transition space.

I’m new to triathlon! What do I need to have ready for my athlete in the transition area? We recommend having a towel out for your child along with a t-shirt (with the event bib already secured to it!), shorts, socks, sneakers, and a water bottle. These items will be on the ground alongside their bike and helmet. Don’t forget to bring goggles for the swim!

Are we swimming in the pond?! Heck no. The Tarrytown Rec Center has an awesome pool for athletes to complete the swim portion of the event in.

Can my kid dive into the pool at the start? No. With the rush of the start of the event from the first timing pad, it is mandatory for safety purposes that all participants jump into the pool feet first. We know some of your kids are excellent at diving, however we must maintain safety measures for everyone involved.

Are helmets mandatory? Yes. No ifs, ands, or buts. No secure helmet for the bike, no competing.

Can my kid do one or two of the three parts of the triathlon and skip the swim/bike/run part? Unless your child has certain special needs, they will need to participate in all disciplines. If your child does have certain needs that make it difficult for them to participate, just email TRIthePARKny@gmail.com about any additional accommodations you need, and we will make it happen.

How long is the course? It varies by long versus short course and is designed to be very doable for all. Long course participants will swim for 100 meters (4 pool lengths), bike for 2 miles (4 laps around the parking lot), and run for 0.5 miles (2 laps around the field). Short course participants will swim for 50 meters (2 pool lengths), bike for 1 mile (2 laps around the parking lot), and run for 0.25 miles (1 lap around the field).

When will my child start? All participants MUST be on the pool deck ready to go by 7:30am. Long course participants will go first, followed by short course participants. The whole event should last about 1-1.5 hours.

Will it be a free for all at the start of the swim with kids jumping on top of one another in the pool? Absolutely not. Swimmers will start one at a time for the pool portion of the race — not in a group. To keep things running smoothly, athletes will be seeded from fastest to slowest based on their estimated swim times. Passing is allowed, and volunteers will be on deck to help guide swimmers through the course.

🐍 100m Snake Swim (Long Course):
Swimmers will complete four lengths of the 25m pool by “snaking” across the lanes (shown in GREEN AND BLUE above). You’ll swim down one lane, go under the lane line, and swim back in the next — repeating this pattern until you complete four lengths of the pool. A fun, continuous swim with a twist!

🐍 50m Snake Swim (Short Course):
Swimmers will complete two lengths of the 25m pool (shown in GREEN above). Starting in one lane, you’ll swim to the wall, duck under the lane line, and return in the next lane. It’s a quick, smooth swim that keeps everyone moving in one direction across the pool.

What if it rains? The event will be held rain or shine. That said, if there is thunder/lightning or dangerous weather conditions, the event will be canceled. Unfortunately, we are unable to refund your entry fee or roll it over to the following year.

Can I volunteer? Yes! Please visit our volunteer page to sign up or email TRIthePARKny@gmail.com to discuss how you can help either before or on the day of the event.

I am a local business owner. How can I get involved? Please visit our sponsor page or email TRIthePARKny@gmail.com to discuss the many different sponsorship opportunities that we have.

How can I support my athlete? Bring the family and rally your friends! This is a great event for spectating and these kids deserve all the support as they conquer what might be their first triathlon.

Any other questions? Email us. We’re happy to help!

Parking

Parking will be at the Tarrytown Recreation Center (238 W. Main St, Tarrytown, NY). The parking lot will close at 7:00 AM, so please plan accordingly and arrive early. Overflow parking is available at the train station, just a short walk from the venue. Please allow ample time for parking and transition area setup.

Rules and Regulations

  • NO HEADPHONES DURING ANY PART OF THE EVENT or you will be disqualified.
  • No helmet, no race. Your helmet strap must be fastened before taking bike from rack and remain fastened until after bike is replaced.
  • Cyclists must walk their bikes in and out of the transition area. Once the race starts, only race participants and volunteers will be allowed in the transition area. Parents and spectators must stay out of the transition space.
  • No Drafting! Stay to your right unless passing. Let athletes know when you are passing.
  • Bike number must be on bike and shall not be removed until your bike is out of the transition area after the race.
  • Run number must be on front of body during entire run!
  • Any unsportsman-like behavior to other competitors and/or event staff will be dealt with by an immediate disqualification.
IMPORTANT RULES:
  • Crossing the centerline
Because of the high speeds and many turns you will encounter on the course, it will never be considered safe to cross the centerline under any circumstances during this race. Crossing a centerline, either broken or solid, even for a moment, will result in a time penalty and possibly disqualification.
  • Bike position
Ride to the right, pass to the left. You can only pass other cyclists on the left. Except when passing, you must ride as far to the right as possible. You have 15 seconds to complete a pass, and once it has been completed you must return to the right hand side of the road.
  • Drafting
Keep three bike lengths of air between you and the cyclist in front of you, unless you're passing. If you try to pass someone, you have 15 seconds to complete the pass.
  • Being overtaken
If another cyclist passes you, you must immediately drop back behind that person, far enough so that you're out of the draft zone. This rule is hard to follow sometimes because your racing instincts will tell you to challenge the person who just passed you. However, it's required. You can only re-pass someone after you've dropped back out of the drafting zone.
  • Unauthorized assistance
You can only receive assistance from official race volunteers and staff. Friends and family cannot give you any food or drink, or provide any help with equipment problems. Once the race begins, everyone competes on the same basis, with the same on-course support. Also, friends and family cannot be on the course with you, and in particular cannot pace you while you're running.
