2026 Updates and Information

  1. We have youth pricing for those aged 19 and under.
  2. Barbecue Bash Quarters Marathon Distance has replaced June Jaunt as a Rochester Runner of the Year race
  3. Barbecue Bash Quarters is certified! This means those who are looking for an autumn race to attempt a Boston Marathon qualifying time can use their 2026 time for their 2028 BM application.
  4. Anyone who is an Obatron Racing Team prior to registration and on race day gets a discount off each individual race, the series, or the races (individually or as a series) with training.
  5. Each race will have very modest awards, which must be claimed BEFORE leaving. None will be held. They will be ready no earlier than 45 minutes after the start of each race and will be later for longer races. Watch event messages for details closer to each race. See "Awards" below for more information.
  6. Training available at https://runsignup.com/Race/NY/Rochester/WestOfTheRiverTraining. (Registration will open by March 10.)

Special Component of Barbecue Bash Quarters

You can choose to run 1, 2, 3, or all 4 quarters of a marathon (6.55 to 26.2 miles) for Barbecue Bash Quarters (BBQ), formerly Barbecue Bash Half. What's more is that you can adjust down during the race if you need to, so if you started out with the idea of getting a marathon done and it's just not in the cards that day, you will not DNF your race; instead, you'll be bumped down to the last quarter you did finish. On the flipside, you can't decide to upgrade while on the course; that has to be done by the end of packet pick-up on race day so you can pay the appropriate difference in cost and so that Hourglass Works can re-map your timing chip attached to your bib. Accompanying friends for an entire lap after you've finished your race is discouraged for various reasons, including difficulty in accurately conveying to authorities and volunteers how many racers are left. There are no early starts. If you need a race with even more generous cutoffs than ours, we have some suggestions.

Race Gift Giveaways: Again, this year we are giving away shirts with entries. The sizing cutoffs are listed above. If you miss the shirt cutoff, if time and supplies allow, you may be given a substitute race gift. Due to the high cost of shirt production, we do not order extras at this time. If you check in on-site after the race is over, we may have shirts from people who don't show up.

Series Information

Registration for or upgrading to the whole series should be done before June Jaunt occurs. If you do all three races, but do not register for the series, we cannot guarantee you will get the gift due to administrative logistics of tracking participants.

When you register for the series, there's only one spot for choosing a giveaway cut/size, so that will be applicable only to the first race, June Jaunt. You will see questions for your cut/size preference for the other two races in a separate question section along with other registration questions to help us shape the race. When it's closer to the race time, the RD will transfer you to each individual race. If you miss the giveaway cutoff, you are not guaranteed a shirt for June Jaunt. If time and supplies allow, those who miss the shirt may be given a substitute race gift.

What You Get

  • pacers and/or lead bikes for select races and paces as available, including a final finisher escort (on foot or bike) for whoever is the last person on the course
  • medal on race day
  • technical race shirts, if registered in time, and an alternate gift if time and supplies allow, if not
  • food-themed kits appropriate to each race
  • amenity kits appropriate to the season of each race
  • series participants get a preparation and recovery kit with their June Jaunt packet pick-up (late conversions will get theirs while supplies last)
  • opportunities to earn more swag and chances to win random prizes on race day
  • personalized bib for Barbecue Bash Quarters, if registered by giveaway (shirt) cutoff
  • chance to make a donation to our Charity Partners for any of three food-related charities on the west side of Monroe County

    RoadID discount (see sponsors)

  • generous cutoff times (June Jaunt: 1 hr., 15 min., The Potato Run: 2 hr., 15 min., Barbecue Bash Quarters: 7 hrs., 30 minutes)

Other

You might have surmised there is an emphasis on food! I grew up hungry until I could earn money myself to buy food, and while my company, Obatron Fitness, isn't a non-profit, each race will include three charitable components: 1) fundraising drive via registration for each host town's food program for those in need; 2) a food drive for the same organization on race day; and 3) a portion of proceeds after expenses are covered will be donated to the organization.

Discount Offers & Referrals
Entering the series rather than individual races gets you pricing equal to or less than the total of the individual race fees (depending upon when you register), a lower RunSignUp fee than the sum of the fees when registering separately, and a series gift. The training offered through the series registration page is at a much-reduced price from when we train folks for races other than our own. If you are a member of GRTC or Obatron Race Team, you get a discount at checkout for that. Additionally, you may earn back some of your registration by having other racers use your personal referral link, generated after you register. See the "Referrals" section for more information.

Race Awards & Raffle Prizes
We provide modest awards for the first-place finishers in each gender designation for overall placements and in age groups (AG). Our age group awards are meant to be fun tokens of acknowledgement and in the spirit of the races. We've had keychains, seasonings, and phone holders, among other prizes, in the past. Winners of Race Prizes or Raffles must be present or have someone as their proxy to claim their awards at the race day presentation or they are forfeited, likely being raffled off to volunteers at the end. There will be a modest prize for the series winner sent December or later, after the whole series concludes, if there are at least ten series participants.

Additional Details
We will post additional details as they occur. Any changes will be updated here, on the Obatron Fitness Facebook page, in our Facebook group, and communicated through RunSignUp messaging. Please note, as the pandemic has proven, life is unpredictable! It is possible that changes in time and location could occur for reasons beyond our control. Keep an eye on your email for race communications to ensure you know all you need to know about the race(s).

In the Area

For those who are coming to our races from outside the area, you might want to know a bit about what is in the area!

The three races are located west of the Genesee River on the west side of Monroe County, NY.

Obatron Productions is based in Greece, NY. The WotR races are in Hilton, Greece, and Spencerport, respectively.

Lodging note: Because we've detailed so many hotels for those coming to Spencerport, which is what made us think to do this section, we refer you to Spencerport section at the end for specific hotel names when referencing general groups in the Hilton and Greece sections.

Hilton

Race: June Jaunt

Lodging

There is no commercial lodging in Hilton, which is northwest of Rochester. The closest hotel is in Spencerport, just outside of Greece:  The Sleepy Bear Inn.

See the Spencerport section for hotels and B&Bs listed in Brockport and the hotels listed in Greece's cluster Highway 104 (Ridge Road) and Interstate 390. The lodging establishments in both areas are about the same distance from Hilton: roughly 20 minutes. The group in the Greece office area and B&Bs in Brockport are about 22-24 minutes out.

Greece

Race: The Potato Run

Lodging

As shown in the Spencerport section below, Greece has a lot of hotels.

The Greece office area group and the 104/Ridge & I390 cluster are both about a 7- to 9-minute drive.

The Sleepy Bear Inn in Spencerport and the Gates hotels are all about an 8- to 10-minute drive.

The Chili & Henrietta options are 10-16 minutes away.

Spencerport

Race: Barbecue Bash Quarters

Lodging

The closest lodging to Spencerport is The Sleepy Bear Inn. It's in Spencerport itself, only a few miles from Spencerport Depot & Canal Museum.

Spencerport is roughly halfway between Brockport and Greece, with Greece being just a little closer.

Brockport shows three B&Bs (Bed & Breakfast at the White, The Victorian B & B, and Park Ave B& B) and three hotels (Best Western Brockport Inn & Suites, Hampton Inn Brockport, and Econo Loge Brockport). They're all about 13-17 minutes away.

Greece has several hotels. Here's the cluster of hotels near Highway 104 (Ridge Road) and Interstate 390. They take 16-20 minutes to get to the race headquarters.

  • Rochester Airport Marriott
  • Fairfield Inn by Marriott Rochester West/Greece
  • Residence Inn by Marriott Rochester West/Greece
  • Holiday Inn Express Rochester - Greece
  • Homewood Suites by Hilton Rochester/Greece
  • Hampton Inn Rochester - Greece

Another grouping in an office area is newer and slightly, taking 15-17 minutes.

  • Everhome Suites - Rochester Greece
  • Home2 Suites by Hilton - Rochester Greece

Nearby in Gates, a little south of Greece, are a couple more that have quick access to both I390 & I490, making them just a couple more minutes faster to get to HQ, depending upon traffic, roughly 13-17 minutes.

  • Quality Inn on Lyell Ave.
  • Radiance Inn & Suites

A bit more south, you'll find Chili and Henrietta, both also with quick access to interstates and highways making the trip to HQ about 17-25 minutes.

  • Red Roof Inn - Rochester Airport
  • Best Western the Inn - Rochester Airport

Refunds, Deferrals, Transfers, Referrals, and Insurance

Referrals

When you register, you should get a code to share with whomever you wish. As people use your code to register, RunSignup tracks it, and if there are enough, you'll get a refund for whatever amount we've chosen each year.

Refunds

As a general rule, there are no refunds, which is agreed to when you register. The exception: If a race or race training is cancelled by the organizers due to circumstances within their control, the race or training will go virtual and you'll be transferred accordingly. If you don't want to be transferred, you will be refunded the registration fee, but not the fee RunSignUp charges to process the initial payment.

Race training registrants are only eligible for a refund if the race for which they would like training is cancelled before training begins. In the event that training has already started and the corresponding race is subsequently cancelled, registrants will not be eligible for refund, but a virtual race will be offered as a graduation race with a digital certificate of completion available online.

Deferrals

Deferrals are not generally allowed. In the event of an exception being made, no refund will be offered if the later in-person event is cancelled; instead, the registration will be transferred to the accompanying virtual race, if any. For this reason, it is best to get insurance to protect your investment.

Transfers

Transfers are permitted at NO charge, if done seven or more days before the race. If you need to transfer seven or fewer days before the race, contact us. We'll see what we can do. There is a formal process, easily done from your account, to transfer your registration so the person who really uses it can have all the benefits of registration. If you give a bib to someone else without the official transfer, you and they may be banned from future races. If you want to know more about that policy, contact us.

Insurance

Life happens and things change. While we have a liberal transfer policy, we do not offer deferrals as a general rule. For that reason, we make insurance an option. We do not handle anything to do with the insurance, so please read the information carefully.

Locations for Races (Includes Parking)

Race Locations

June Jaunt

Studio 22 Fitness, 67 Old Hojack Lane, Hilton, New York 14468
Parking is on both sides of the building, although only one side is going to be open at the start. Additional parking is available along the street and there are nearby lots.

Studio 22 has generously allowed us to do packet pick-up inside on race day as well as stretch on their indoor turf and use their showers.

The Potato Run

Towpath Shelter, Greece Canal Park, 241 Elmgrove Rd., Rochester, NY 14626
Take the first left road off the entrance. The shelter is on the right just after the road turns into a one-way path. There is limited parking at the shelter. There are a few spaces near the red restroom building, in the small playground parking lot at the entrance of the road to the dog park, and at the nearest lodges (Rotary Lodge and Grasso Lodge). There is limited pull-off space along the road before the shelter. Please be mindful that the traffic circle is ONE WAY. At none of the intersections around the circle can you turn left, except the one where you are brought to a stop sign to the left of the exit of the circle.

Barbecue Bash Quarters

Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum, 16 East Ave, Spencerport, NY 14559. Limited parking is available onsite. Tops is park at your own risk. There is free parking in nearby public lots across the street (less than a quarter mile walk). The municipal parking lot is bounded by South Union (no access), Amity St., Church St., and West Ave. There is also free parking behind the Village Office on West Ave, across from Church St.

Course Descriptions

The purpose of the West of the River Series is to highlight points in Monroe County, NY that are west of the Genesee River. Our host towns (Hilton, Greece, and Spencerport) each offer a unique feel. Following are the course links and general descriptions of the courses. After that are links to additional route options for training and to see various areas west of the river. Please Note: None of our courses have closed roads! All of them have some portion where sidewalk use is advantageous. Tangent cutting is a common practice, but it is inadvisable when traffic is present. Cars ALWAYS win, even if you have the right of way.

As we get closer to each race day it's possible something unexpected might cause an alteration. If that happens, I'll update here, via e-mail, and through the Facebook group.

Map
View the course at https://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/5556356155 to see elevation profile and mileage markers. Course not certified, although it is accurately measured to ensure 3.11 miles, regardless of folks' watch data.

Course Description
Relatively flat with long, straight stretches, many of which are through open, country areas. All portions are paved. Starts at Studio 22 Fitness from the west side of the building, heading west along Old Hojack, south on Collamer, east on West Ave. From there, racers make a detour from the long stretches visiting the Village Elementary School neighborhood before returning to West Ave, doing a short bit going north on Lake Ave, and returning to Studio 22 to cross the finish line on the east side of the building. Except when racers get to the offshoot for the school section, the turns are all lefts.

Start/Finish/Aid Station/Restrooms
The start line and finish line are on opposite sides of the building. The start line is in the parking lot near the Studio 22 entrance. About halfway through the course, there is an aid station with water and Gatorade. Bringing your own bottle is recommended, although we do provide cups. Turning left nearly continuously on the course, the finish line is on the left BEFORE you get to the building. If you were to pass that lot, you'd overshoot the finish and go back to the start. Restrooms are available in Studio 22 as are showers. There are no facilities on the course. Refreshments after the race include water and Gatorade.

The Potato Run (10K)

Map
View the course at https://www.mapmyrun.com/routes/view/6225550420 to see the elevation profile and mileage markers. Course not certified, although it is accurately measured to ensure 3.11 miles, regardless of folks' watch data.

Course Description
The Potato Run is paved except the parts on the canal path, which is largely packed earth with fine gravel in parts and occasional small sections of asphalt or concrete. Road shoes recommended. Trail shoes would be too aggressive. Racers face traffic, except when on the short stretch of sidewalk in the area of Ridgeway and Long Pond.

The course starts across from the Towpath Shelter, heads left around the traffic circle (crossing to the right to stay on the traffic circle), heads uphill to the Rotary Lodge, continues around the traffic circle before heading left to the Grasso Lodge cul de sac, then turning left at the one-way traffic circle and heading out of the park. Next, you traverse the inclining Elmgrove Road before turning onto Ridgeway for rolling hills. Scooting across the road to access the sidewalk almost directly across from New Comer Funeral Home, you continue to the stop light to turn right on Long Pond. Keeping to the sidewalk, you'll turn right at the light on Long Pond to the gated righthand Erie Canal Path entrance/exit just before the bridge, which leads racers for more nearly two miles along the canal passing Henpeck Park to return to the paved pathway of Greece Canal Park. From there, it's nearly all downhill, turning left immediately after the red restroom, and crossing the crosswalk to the finish line.

Start/Finish/Aid Station/Restrooms
The start line is on the pathway between the red restroom building and the canal path, facing the one-way traffic circle. Pre-race restrooms are in the aforementioned red restroom building. Approximately 1.75 miles in, you will pass Henpeck Park, which is across the road and has a portable toilet available in the parking lot. Be careful crossing as there is no crosswalk. The aid station is about halfway through the course and accessible from the sidewalk after you turn onto Long Pond Rd. It offers water and Gatorade. About the 5.5-mile mark, you'll approach Henpeck Park again, this time from the canal path, giving you access to the portable toilet for a second time. Get back on the canal path afterwards to continue to Greece Canal Park. Water and Gatorade are among the refreshments back at Towpath Shelter.

Course Description
Headquartered at Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum (SDCM), racers start along the canal in front of SDCM on Heritage Trail. A portion of the trail is paved and the rest of the trail is packed earth with fine gravel. That's less than a mile of the course. The rest is paved. Road shoes recommended. Trail shoes would be too aggressive.

You take off heading west along a lovely route throughout Village of Spencerport's quiet residential neighborhoods, returning to BUT NOT STOPPING at the starting area, and continuing east on the trail along the canal, making a U-turn to return westward to the finish/lap line. This makes for a flat start and finish punctuated with a variety of hills from a bit on the steep side to gently inclining and declining. The 6.55-mile (quarter marathon) route is done up to four times, allowing racers from the front of the pack to the back of the pack to see each other at various points.

Start/Finish/Laps/Aid Station/Restrooms
The start line is on the paved portion of Heritage Trail across from the main (upstairs) entrance of SDCM. When racers are working on the sixth mile of each lap, they will PASS the start/finish/lap line to continue east on the trail to the U-turn point, where they will once again head toward SDCM. Due to the repeating nature of this course, racers finishing their laps cross the timing mat at the conclusion of each lap. If they are done with their race, they veer left toward the building; if they are starting a new lap, they veer right to continue west along the path back toward S. Union St.

Aid stations are at three points: near the start line on the south side of the path, at about two miles into the lap across from the intersection of Coventry and Kirkgate, and about 5.5 miles in after you pass the start line and before you make the U-turn on the Heritage Trail to get back to the start/new lap/finish line. Each has water and Gatorade as does the post-race refreshment area.

There are bathrooms at the race headquarters (Spencerport Depot and Canal Museum), which is where each 6.55-mile lap begins and ends. Restrooms are located in the lower level of the depot, a short walk off the course. You pass HQ about 5.5 miles in before making the U-turn on Heritage Trail, which brings you back to it at 6.55 miles, giving you access to them twice each lap. That puts the miles at which you have access to the indoor toilets at approximately: Mile 0, Mile 5.5, Mile 6.55, Mile 12.05, Mile 13.1, Mile 18.6, Mile 19.65, Mile 25.15, and Mile 26.2.

We will have a portable toilet at the corner of West Ave. and Evergreen St. inside the gates for the DPW, a few steps off the course as you'd turn right onto Evergreen. That provides additional access at approximately: Mile 4.5, Mile 11.05, Mile 17.6, and Mile 24.15.

Between the two locations, at 12 minutes per mile, you'd never be more than about 54 minutes without access. At 20 minutes per mile, you'd never be more than 1 hour, 30 minutes without toilet access.

The Barbecue Bash Quarters map below is slightly out of date with the change for certification for 2024. As the map on MapMyRun shows, the left turn toward RM 12 no longer exists and instead of going right at RM 15, racers continue to the end of that road, run around the teardrop shape of the cul de sac, and return to RM 15 where they now turn left to continue the rest of the course as shown.

Course Map as of 2025

Be sure to follow any route arrows or signs when approaching intersections with no volunteers, especially with Barbecue Bash Quarters, where there are several turns. Turn directions for BBQ are in the PDF at the bottom of this page. They will be updated for 2024.
