2019 … January 19, 2019
No report from this year. My dad died 2 weeks later, and our focus shifted to his hospice immediately after the event.
2018, The Perfect Year (CW) | January 13, 2018
With consistent rain falling in the Treasure Valley race week, highs in the 40s and even 50s, and quite muddy conditions for course marking on Wednesday, most of us were resigned to a Fest of Classic Wilson Creek Mud. However, the rain didn’t hit Wilson Creek on Thursday or Friday giving the warm sun and mild temps time to dry things out immensely. The weather held, and we were treated to 50 degree temps, full blue sky and sunshine, and drier trails and roads than ever. Water was running in Wilson Creek, but despite that section of sloppiness, most people finished with a suspicious lack of mud or water on their shoes. Shorts and t-shirts abounded. People regretted wearing tights. Fires were superfluous, and the feelings of well-being ran strong. We’ll be surprised if we ever see another April day in January at Wilson. Best. Day. Ever.
Temperature: high 50F, low 30F; ~no wind (!?)
Totals: 248 registered, 214 Started, 213 Finished; 1 DNF

2015, Another Fruddy Year (CW) | January 17, 2015
Warm temps and some early-week precip made mud the talk of the town prior to race day. Course marking day was a mess, and we knew we couldn’t drive past the Rocky Road aid station under any circumstances. Race morning dawned colder than expected, gifting runners with firm trails for the morning. Runners on the course into the afternoon got the full brunt of the mud, however, making this a Fruddy year, but still one of the nicest race days yet. The Canyon County ATV club would be needed in full force to transport aid stations out in the relatively warm afternoon that was dotted with rain showers. We even saw a little sun and blue sky throughout the day.
Total: 352 registered, 303 Started, 297 Finished; 5 DNF

2014, A (Nearly) Perfect Year (CW) | January 18, 2014
An inversion in the lower elevations and start/finish area kept things hoar frosty and cold, but runners enjoyed firm trails and some sunshine higher up, for an all around great experience.

The commendations from runners about the volunteers are many. Thanks to Tony Huff, Dennis Ahern, Brian Nebeker, and Ben Blessing for marking the course, and to Amy King, Jon Kinzer, David Tarkalson, Mark Hutchinson, and Rich Hale for sweeping our courses. THANKS to Rich Marion for providing professional timing.
10/16/12: Note – Change in rules from 2012: If you sign up for the 50k race and choose to drop at the 20.3 mile point, this will be considered a DNF. Due to the confusion caused by numerous people choosing to drop and take a 20M finish last year, we are discontinuing this practice. If you start the race as a 50k participant and do not finish 50k, you will not be listed as a finisher at any distance. You may change races up to 1/2 hour before race start, but may not change races once they have begun.
2012, A Muddy Year (CCW) | January 12, 2012
With 40 degree temps and hours of torrential rain the night before the race, a worst case trail condition scenario, the 2012 Owyhee clay mud was primed to wear down even the heartiest of runners. Here’s the Wilson Creek 2012 by the numbers:
194 starters; 37 DNSs; 9 DNFs
87 10-Mile finishers; 55 20-Mile finishers; 43 50k finishers = 185 muddy finishers in the inaugural official WCF50k

2011, A Fruddy Year (CCW) | January 8, 2011
In 2011, we ran the Frozen 50k, Fatass style, just for fun, a small group of us out for a trail run. It was so much fun that we decided to do it again. The temps were very pleasant, cold enough for the ground to be frozen in the morning, but warming up by noonish to bring on some mud (i.e. Fruddy).
Fastest/Slowest Times:
50k: 5:17 fastest; 9:06 slowest
20M: 4:29 fastest; 7:52 slowest

Race Day Info
Toilet Situation
The BLM put in a second vault toilet at the lower trailhead, meaning there are now 4 toilets available near the start line. Give yourself plenty of time before the race to access one of the toilet options. We will also have 2 additional portapotties on site at the main HQ.
Race Day Parking
We utilize several trailhead parking locations to fit everyone in. Carpool if possible. Depending on when you arrive and where you park, you may have up to half-mile walk from your car to the start area, so plan accordingly. You can stash a bag in the drop bag area for the finish if you'd like. When you arrive, parking attendants will direct you where to park. Please be polite and don't give them a hard time! They are volunteers who are out there for you and also have experience with how to get everyone parked in the limited space in an organized manner. **New for 2026: We'll have a shuttle van available for people parking in the most far lots.**
Check In
Arrive within the hour before your race starts (not before 6AM) to pick up your packet and bib # (if you haven't already) in the white tent in the start area. There is space in the tent for you to leave stuff if you don't want to go back to your car. ALL RUNNERS MUST CHECK IN RACE MORNING... even if you picked up your bib # at packet pickup.
Race Day Signups
After registration closes, you can sign up on race morning. Cash only. $100 for 50k/20M and $80 for the 10 mile.
Multi-Use, Non-Exclusive Trails
The Wilson Creek Trail Management Area is open to mountain bikers, horse riders, bird hunters, ATV riders, recreational shooters, campers, etc. The trails aren't exclusively for race use, even on race day, so share the trails and be friendly ambassadors for our sport to anyone you see. Pick up after yourself and pick up other people's trash if you are able.
Course Marking
The course is marked with plastic flagging.
The 10 mile loop is marked with green flags and reflectors.
The 20 mile loop is marked with orange flags.
50k runners: run the 20 mile loop (following orange) followed by the 10 mile loop (following green)
Awards
Pick up your award at the end - top 3 in each age division. We don't do an awards ceremony because the races are so spread out. Make sure to check and see if you're in the top 3 for your age.
Frozen Stiff award for the last place 50k.
50k Pre-Race Briefing
Make sure you check in before the race and are wearing your bib # with timing chip
You have two jobs out while racing:
1. Stay on course. This is a closed course; follow the markings.
2. Check in at every aid station!! We track each runner via HAM radio through every single aid station. Make sure the person acknowledged your number. Let an aid station or race official know if you are dropping out. Every year, we have to call someone's emergency contact looking for them only to find they've hit the sauna already. We don't want to do that.
Follow the out and back to Wilson Peak summit. As you are approaching, you will see the radio towers to your right. Go to them.
At the summit, collect an item from the green bag on the radio tower and show it to the folks at Mud Pit aid station.
YOU WILL DO THE 20 MILE LOOP FIRST FOLLOWED BY THE 10 MILE LOOP
Follow the ORANGE flagging for your first 20 mile loop
Follow the GREEN flagging for the second 10 mile loop.
You have a 3:00 PM cutoff at mile 20.3 at the Pulse Paradise aid station. You must leave Paradise by 3PM to keep going.
Make sure you have a headlamp if leaving Paradise aid station in the afternoon.
If you drop at 20 miles, that's a DNF, not a 20 mile finish. 20 mile racers do have the option to bump up to 50k at Paradise.
20 Mile Pre-Race Briefing
Make sure you check in before the race and are wearing your bib # with timing chip.
Follow the ORANGE flagging for your entire race.
If you find yourself in a place where you're only seeing green flagging, go back to the last place you saw orange and try again.
If you're registered in the 20 mile and decide you're having a great day and want to keep going at Paradise aid station, you can bump up to the 50k on the fly. Make sure to let the aid station know.

The 10 Mile course is marked with GREEN flagging. You will also see orange flagging on the course. That is for 50k/20Mile runners. You should never be following JUST orange flags. If you find yourself seeing orange flags but no green, go back to the last spot you saw a green marking and try again.
You have two aid stations, at miles 5 & 7.

Emily Schuh Berriochoa, Race DirectorFounded Wilson Creek Frozen 50k in 2011 with Davina Jackson. It was our brain child and a labor of love. The first year was a fatass run with no entry fee or markings; it was so fun that we created the official race for 2012. We also founded the timed runs at Eagle Island, which is now the Pulse Endurance Runs, and the Silver City Endurance runs, which was held in 2012 and 2013. We also formed the Idaho Trail Ultra Series in 2012 to build up the Idaho ultra community, a series that endures (idahotrailultraseries.com), now under the direction of Beaverhead race director David Tarkalson. I am an ultra runner and avid reader and delve into random pursuits like crocheting and CrossFit. I love doing the winter ultras on foot pulling a sled; my favorite summer ultra is the Standhope 100 mile race out of Sun Valley. The picture is of me and my dad. My dad introduced me to Wilson Creek in the early 1990s, when mountain bikers and runners were a rare encounter, and the place holds a special place in my heart. |

Amy King Kinzer, Race DirectorAmy took the position of co-race director in 2014. She's been at Wilson Creek all the years: 1st year at the finish line, 2nd year as the 50K sweep, and as RD since. Amy: I grew up backpacking in the mountains around Adams and Valley County during the summer and skiing Brundage all winter long. In any spare time, I'm backpacking, skiing, trail running and gardening. What I love about Wilson Creek is that it's just a group of people who embrace crazy and hard stuff. That's my tribe. |

Jon Kinzer, Logistics DirectorJon (Mr. Amy) is famous for his off the couch endurance exploits. He's indispensable in making sure all of our 'stuff' is present when and where it's supposed to be. Jon also has the thankless task of managing parking along with the more fun job of starting the races with his shotgun. |

Jimmy Byrne, Finish Line Food CaptainJim Byrne has been Wilson Creek's finish line food captain since 2015; he is organized, energetic, and utterly indispensable. # of Wilson Creek Finishes: All of them - I never leave the start/finish line Jim: My background is swimming, so that is why I enjoy not running up into the beautiful trails at Wilson Creek. I might get lost. I just focus on making the coffee and heating up the soup. My favorite activity is bike-packing with my wife Cynthia (and traveling to France with her). Idaho is such a beautiful state, and when you slow down and hike/run/bike...you really can see and enjoy the great state of Idaho. Everyone involved in this event are great people with big hearts. My good friend Bill asked me to come out to volunteer 8 races ago while he ran the course. Then I met Emily, Amy, Jon and crew - and I’m addicted to helping out this great race. |

Tony Huff, 20 Mile Course Marking CaptainTony has marked the 20 mile course at Wilson Creek every year since its inception in 2012. In addition to that, he has finished the 50k race all 7 years running (through 2020). 2023 is his 8th Wilson Creek. Tony: I enjoy the mountain ultras and the winter sled-pull ultras. What I love about Wilson Creek is people willing to go out in a crazy variety of Owyhee winter weather and trail conditions and enjoy themselves. |

Rachael Bazzett, 10 Mile Course Marking CaptainRachael has been marking the course since the early days. She's a die hard dog lover and accomplished ultra runner. |

Rick Harris, ATV WranglerI am a member of the Canyon County ATV Club and have coordinated the ATVs/UTVs for all of the Frozen 50K Runs. I started running a little at the urging of my son when I was 68 years old. A bit late to get started but I found that I really enjoyed running. I just wished I had started many years earlier. I ran my first half marathon on my 70th birthday and have managed to survive two Robie runs. I have only run the 10 mile course at the Frozen 50K once but hope to do it again sometime. Backpacking may prove to be my new hobby. I really enjoy ATV riding and fishing, and Idaho is a wonderful location for those hobbies. I think the thing I like best about the Frozen 50K is getting to associate with the runners. Everyone seems to appreciate the help that we provide and I find that the runners are very thankful for the help that we give them. I hope there are many more Frozen 50K events.

Herb Ankrum, K7DHA, HAM DirectorHerb has been directing your radio traffic at Wilson Creek since 2018. He pulls together a team of hard core amateur HAM radio operators from Treasure Valley REACT and other sources, and he and his better looking half Pam Ankrum run Net Control from the race Headquarters. They track all the runners and make sure everyone is safe and accounted for. If you see him, say thanks! | |

Rich Marion, K7DPC, Timing DirectorRich Marion of ProRaceTiming has been with Wilson Creek since the beginning, and we wouldn't do it without him. He's a programming genius and one-man traveling finish line presence. Since about 2018, his brother Jack has joined him in the fun; we love having Jack around the finish line.
